About The Role

Balfour Beatty Living Places is one of the UK’s leading infrastructure services businesses, working in long‑term partnership with local authorities to maintain and improve the places people use every day.

Living Places delivers highways maintenance, street lighting and public realm services across the UK – keeping roads moving, communities connected and public spaces safe, clean and sustainable.

With long‑term contracts and trusted partnerships, often spanning 10–15 years and valued in excess of £100m per annum, we’re now seeking a Head of Commercial to join our BBLP Area Leadership Team, leading and responsible for the commercial function of BBLP ensuring that consistent commercial performance is delivered in all areas of the business.


What you’ll be doing

* Ensure Balfour Beatty and UKCS commercial processes are robust and consistently applied within BBGE creating a culture of maximising the cost - revenue gap while maintaining very strong customer relationships.
* Own the business commercial performance and budget “promise” to Balfour Beatty.
* Support work winning and Business Development activity; the Head of Commercial will guide, challenge, mentor from a commercial perspective all BBGE opportunities and existing contractual obligations.
* Provide commercial and management support to the Area Director to ensure that the performance of the business meets or exceeds profitability targets.
* Work with Finance and other key enabling functions to support the budgeting and forecasting process.
* Manage the Gate process and governance protocols for BBLP - working closely with the Work Winning, Operations and Finance teams.
* Expand and develop internal senior relationships with key Balfour Beatty senior stakeholders – Regions / other Strategic Business Units / Legal / Commercial / Finance / Procurement, etc.
* Lead and develop a high performing commercial team across BBGE by embedding a high-performance culture including practical risk and opportunity management processes which are simple to apply and really do add value.
* Develop and implement informal and formal coaching, training and professional development programmes to improve the commercial awareness and skill levels across the commercial population within BBLP and ensure good practice is shared and adopted as BAU across all the BBLP contracts and operational teams.
* Provide assurance to UKCS SBU leadership that BBLP has the commercial function and team to deliver BBLP’s budget & promise.


Who we’re looking for

This individual will need to get up to speed with the differing long‑term frameworks across BBLP’s business portfolio.

As well as the functional responsibility the successful candidate will also be a member of and represent the BBLP Area Leadership Team. This will involve safety leader tours, regular business updates and leading by example displaying Balfour Beatty behaviours and promoting our D&I agenda.

This individual will have a demonstrable track record in their ability to lead, influence and communicate with others, and to “Get Stuff Done” in the varied portfolio of projects and disciplines delivered by BBGE, crucially delivering to deadlines and delivering on promises to customers and stakeholders.

The individual will have appropriate qualifications, and professional membership of the RICS, or similar. Previous experience and success in the management of optimum business and commercial performance in an organisation of similar size and complexity to BBGE will be desirable. Commercial expert flair will be a pre‑requisite to maximise opportunities and deliver margin confidence, minimise risks and maximise cashflow.

The individual will be able to demonstrate leadership and the cultivation / development / coaching and mentoring of driven, capable and motivated commercial staff across all of all the BBGE project teams.
