We are seeking a highly skilled and analytical Payments Manager to focus on optimising our internal payment methods, processes, and customer journeys. This role partners closely with internal teams across Digital, Retail, Finance, Fraud, Technology, and Customer functions to ensure our existing payment infrastructure is performing at its best and that new payment journeys are designed and delivered to a high standard.

Working in tandem with our external-facing Payments Manager—who manages providers, schemes, and market opportunities—this role looks inside the business to maximise the performance, efficiency, and experience of our current and future payment landscape.


Payments Performance & Optimisation

* Analyse performance of all existing payment methods, identifying opportunities to improve acceptance rates, reduce costs, and enhance reliability.
* Lead deep-dive investigations into operational issues, customer drop-off points, and inefficiencies across in-store and online journeys.
* Proactively recommend enhancements to logic, routing, UI/UX, configuration, fraud settings, and process flows.


Internal Stakeholder Engagement

* Act as the central point of contact for internal teams on all payment-related operational matters.
* Collaborate with Digital and CX teams to map, assess, and optimise customer payment journeys end-to-end.
* Partner with Finance, Fraud, and Technology to ensure payment processes support reconciliation, reporting, compliance, and risk reduction.
* Influence stakeholders at all levels through clear insights, recommendations, and business cases.


Payment Journey Design & Delivery

* Work closely with product and technology teams on the design of new payment journeys or features, ensuring they meet commercial, operational, and customer experience objectives.
* Support change delivery through requirements gathering, documentation, UAT, and internal readiness planning.
* Champion the customer payment experience, ensuring every journey is seamless, friction-free, and intuitive.


Reporting & Insight

* Build a data-driven approach to decision making by establishing clear performance metrics across all payment types across Grocery & George
* Produce regular insights for leadership teams, highlighting opportunities, risks, and improvement progress.


Continuous Improvement & Risk

* Monitor internal controls, operational processes, and reconciliation effectiveness, escalating issues and proposing solutions.
* Ensure alignment with internal policy, audit standards, and regulatory expectations in partnership with Compliance.
* Drive continuous improvement across payment operations, systems efficiency, and internal workflows.


Qualifications

* Proven experience (5+ years) in payments, digital optimisation, operational analysis, or similar roles within retail/FS/e-commerce.
* Strong understanding of payment methods, operational processes, and customer journeys.
* Highly analytical with experience interpreting data, identifying trends, and presenting actionable insights.
* Excellent communication and stakeholder-management skills, with the ability to influence cross-functional teams.
* Experience working with product, CX, or technology teams on journey mapping or feature delivery.
* Strong problem-solving capability and a continuous-improvement mindset.
* Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple priorities simultaneously.
