JOB TITLE: Teacher - Post-Primary

REPORTS TO: Principal


Professional Duties of a Teacher

TEACHERS’ (TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT) REGULATIONS (NORTHERN IRELAND) 1987

* Exercise of general professional duties
* A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require:
* if he/she is employed as a teacher in a school under the reasonable direction of the principal of that school;
* if he/she is employed by a board on terms under which he/she is not assigned to any one school, under the reasonable direction of that board and of the principal of any school in which he/she may for the time being be required to work as a teacher.
* Exercise of particular duties
* A teacher employed as a teacher (other than a principal) in a school shall perform, in accordance with any directions which may be reasonably given to him/her by the principal, from time to time, such particular duties as may reasonably be assigned to him/her.
* A teacher to whom paragraph 1(b) refers shall perform, in accordance with any direction which may reasonably be given to him/her from time to time by the board or by the principal of any school in which he/she may for the time being be required to work as a teacher, such particular duties as may reasonably be assigned to him/her.
* Planning
1. Planning and preparing courses and lessons
2. Teaching, according to their educational needs, the pupils assigned to him/her, including the setting and marking of work to be carried out by the pupils in school and elsewhere
3. Assessing, recording and reporting on the development, progress and attainment of pupils
* General
1. Promoting the general progress and well-being of individual pupils and of any class or group of pupils assigned to him/her
2. Providing advice and guidance to pupils on educational and social matters and on their further education and future careers including information about sources of more expert advice on specific questions, making relevant records and reports
3. Making records of and reports on the personal and social needs of pupils
4. Communicating and consulting with the parents of pupils
5. Communicating and cooperating with such persons or bodies outside the school as may be approved by the employing authority and the Board of Governors
6. Participating in meetings arranged for any of the purposes described above
* Assessment/Reporting

Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to individual pupils and groups of pupils

* Staff Development/Professional Development

Participating in any scheme of staff development and performance review; reviewing from time to time teaching methods and programmes of work; participating in arrangements for further training and professional development; advising and cooperating with the Principal and other teachers on the preparation and development of courses of study, teaching materials, teaching programmes, methods of teaching and assessment and pastoral arrangements.

* Discipline/Health and Safety

Maintaining good order and discipline among pupils in accordance with the policies of the employing authority and safeguarding their health and safety on school premises or during authorised school activities elsewhere; participating in meetings relating to curriculum, administration or pastoral arrangements.

* Public Examinations

Participating in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations, assessing pupils for such examinations, recording and reporting such assessments, and supervising pupils during examination processes.

* Review and Development of Management Activities/Administration

Contributing to the selection for appointment and professional development of other teachers, including induction and assessment of probationary teachers; coordinating or managing the work of other teachers; participating in the review, development and management of curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions; administering tasks related to these duties, including supervision of support staff and the ordering and allocation of equipment and materials.

Subject to the provisions of Article 22 of the Order, attending assemblies; registering attendance and supervising pupils as required.

* Number of days/Hours of work

A full-time teacher shall be available for 195 days in a year with specific contractual constraints on classroom teaching, hours, breaks and related duties as defined in the terms of employment; duties may be performed before, during or after school sessions; mid-day supervision and breaks are regulated; a year is defined as 12 months from 31 July; weeks are defined as 7 days from Sunday.

Teachers may be required to provide cover and to participate in administrative and organisational tasks related to duties described above; the post-holder is expected to promote good relations, equality of opportunity and to pay due regard to equality legislation at all times in accordance with Section 75 of the Northern Ireland Act (1998).


Section 1 - Essential Criteria

The following are essential criteria which will be measured at shortlisting and may be explored during interview/selection. Demonstrate how you meet these criteria in your application.

* Qualifications/Professional Membership: Hold a teaching qualification which meets the requirements for recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland by the date of taking up duty; hold a degree or equivalent Level 6 qualification or teaching qualification which has prepared the applicant to teach Geography as their main subject by the date of taking up duty.
* Experience: Demonstrable experience of teaching Geography at post-primary level to achieve positive outcomes (Teaching practice accepted).
* Other: Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post. Pre-employment Check.


Section 2 - Essential Criteria

Additional essential criteria measured during the interview/selection stage:

* Knowledge: Demonstrable current knowledge of the subject area; knowledge of subject-specific teaching approaches; knowledge and understanding of approaches to assessment to promote effective teaching and pupil progress.
* Skills/Abilities: Effective communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work collaboratively to promote positive relationships with pupils, colleagues, parents and the wider community; ability to work as an effective team member and to motivate self and others.

Section 3 - Desirable Criteria

Some or all of the desirable criteria may be used to determine a manageable pool of candidates, applied in the order listed. Demonstrate on your application how you meet the desirable criteria; failure to do so may affect shortlisting.

* Qualifications And Experience: Demonstrate by qualification or experience the ability and willingness to contribute to the School’s extra-curricular provision; demonstrable experience of teaching Geography to A-Level (Teaching practice accepted).

Disclosure of Criminal Background

The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (Northern Ireland) Order 2007 defines working directly with children or young people as ‘regulated activity’. If recommended for appointment to a post involving regulated activity, the Education Authority will undertake an Enhanced Disclosure of Criminal Background. You will be expected to meet the cost of an Enhanced Disclosure Certificate. Details of payment will be provided at the pre-employment stage.
