Locum Consultant Respiratory with an interest in CF and Bronchiectasis

Respiratory Medicine at Leicester Hospitals has a national and international reputation for its academic and clinical services. We are looking to appoint a locum consultant for 12 months to work as part of a CF/Bronchiectasis/PCD MDT comprising 5 Consultants, 2 Registrars, a ward‑based team of resident doctors in training, 1 CF ACP, 2 CF Specialist Nurses, 2 Bronchiectasis Specialist Nurses, 1 PCD Specialist Nurse, 5 Specialist Physiotherapists, a CF administrator, a PCD administrator, a CF Specialist Pharmacist, a Specialist Psychologist, a Specialist Dietician, a CF Diabetes Nurse Specialist, a Consultant Microbiologist, and a dedicated PA to the Consultants.


Main duties of the job

* Deliver clinical services to patients with Cystic Fibrosis, Bronchiectasis, and Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia through inpatient care, specialist outpatient clinics, and ambulatory care.
* Work closely with the wider CF/BE/PCD MDT.
* Deliver clinical sessions to support the management of general respiratory patients.

We manage 5 base respiratory wards (134 beds), some with sub‑specialty interest including pleural disease, cancer and cystic fibrosis. A dedicated ward for non‑invasive ventilation is in place, and we are exploring a respiratory support unit (RSU).


Job responsibilities

* The overriding purpose is to support the provision of highest quality patient care through personal actions and continuous improvement.
* Participate in general respiratory service development and business planning in collaboration with other Consultants, the CMG, local GPs and commissioners within the local CCGs.
* Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff, respecting local employment and human resource policies and procedures.
* Carry out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required, contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity locally and nationally.
* Ensure duties are carried out to the highest standard in line with GMC Good Medical Practice and current quality initiatives within the area of work.
* Respond in a timely fashion to legitimate requests from Trust officers, including investigations of incidents or complaints.
* Participate in teaching and training of junior staff and other clinical staff groups; serve as primary supervisor for junior medical staff.
* Engage in professional continuing medical education; study leave is provided for this purpose.
* Undertake Trust Corporate and Directorate specific induction and competency programmes appropriate to the role.
* Maintain continuing professional development (CPD) to enable successful revalidation, fulfil annual appraisal and statutory mandatory training as stipulated by the Trust.


Person Specification


Qualifications / Training

* MB BS or Equivalent with Full GMC Registration and accreditation for Higher Specialist status.
* MRCP or Equivalent.
* Membership of relevant Specialist Societies such as the British and European Thoracic Societies.
* Higher degree or additional qualification.


Experience

* Expertise in all aspects of Acute and Emergency Respiratory Care Management.
* Excellent clinical skills and experience requisite to meet all aspects of the Job Plan.
* Ability to apply sound clinical judgment to problems.
* Demonstrates clear logical thinking and analytical approach.
* Evidence of clinical commitment to, and sub‑specialty training in CF and Bronchiectasis.


Communication

* Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English for effective communication with patients and colleagues.
* Empathic and sensitive; capacity to take other perspectives and treat others with understanding.
* Highly developed emotional intelligence.
* High standard of presentation both written and verbal.
* Track record of successful change management; proven ability to maintain focus in a demanding environment.


Management

* Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and supervise others.
* Experience of leading teams and awareness of leadership styles.
* Ability to effectively organise, prioritise and manage clinical workload.
* Understanding of the wider health agenda and modern NHS.
* Ability to work to overcome barriers to change (negotiating, influencing and persuasion skills).
* Knowledge and understanding of clinical governance issues.
* Evidence of management and administration experience.
* Management training on an accredited course.
* Experience of service development and quality improvement.


Motivation

* Ability to motivate and develop both medical and non‑medical staff across the MDT team.
* Commitment to further develop the post and respiratory service.


Audit / Quality Improvement

* Effective participation in and commitment to clinical audit and quality improvement work.
* Completion of formal courses in audit and quality improvement.


Research

* Understanding and interest in research.
* Ability to critically appraise research.
* Apply research to clinical practice.
* Evidence of meaningful participation in research, e.g. PhD, MD, PI/Co‑I on non‑clinical studies, PI or heavily involved sub‑I in clinical studies, publications in nationally and internationally recognised peer‑reviewed journals.


Teaching

* Experience of and commitment to training/ teaching undergraduate and postgraduates.
* Appraisal and assessment skills.
* Ability to assess clinical competencies, enthusiastic and ability to inspire and lead others.
* Post‑graduate qualification in teaching and training or running courses.
