* General Surgery / ENT / Orthopaedics Location: NHS Trust (UK) Start Date: ASAP Contract Type: Agency Locum Grade: SHO / Trust Grade (Equivalent to FY2–CT1 level) Hours: Full time (rota based), including on calls, nights, and weekends as required Job Summary The postholder will work as a Locum SHO across General Surgery, ENT, and Orthopaedics, supporting inpatient wards, emergency admissions, theatres, and outpatient activity.
The role involves delivering safe, timely, and effective clinical care under the supervision of registrars and consultants.
The doctor will be expected to integrate quickly into the team and contribute to smooth departmental workflow.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
General Clinical Duties
Provide day to day medical care for surgical inpatients across General Surgery, ENT, and Orthopaedics.
Participate in the surgical on call rota, including clerking emergency admissions and reviewing unwell patients.
Perform initial assessment, investigation, and management of acute surgical presentations.
Escalate concerns appropriately to senior clinicians and follow local escalation pathways.
Support ward rounds, documenting clearly and ensuring timely completion of clinical tasks.
Request and interpret basic investigations (bloods, imaging, microbiology) under supervision.
Assist in theatres, including pre operative preparation and post operative reviews.
Contribute to outpatient clinics where required.
Specialty Specific Exposure
General Surgery:
* Clerking acute abdomen cases, peri operative management, post op reviews, fluid management, and wound care.
ENT:
* Initial management of common ENT emergencies (epistaxis, tonsillitis, peritonsillar abscess, airway concerns) with senior support.
Orthopaedics:
* Assessment of fractures, post-operative care, compartment syndrome awareness, and assisting in trauma lists.
Rota & Working Pattern
Full time rota including days, long days, nights, and weekends.
Mix of ward cover, admissions unit, and theatre support.
On call commitments as per departmental needs.
Flexibility required due to cross cover between surgical specialties.
Required Skills & Experience
Minimum of two years’ NHS experience at FY2/SHO level or above
Valid right to work in the UK
Full GMC registration with licence to practise
Previous UK surgical experience at FY2/SHO level or above
Competent in basic surgical skills, cannulation, venepuncture, catheterisation, and initial emergency management
Ability to work independently with appropriate senior support
Strong communication, documentation, and teamwork skills
Up to date mandatory training and right to work in the UK
Governance & Professionalism
Adhere to GMC Good Medical Practice and local Trust policies.
Participate in handovers, morbidity & mortality meetings, and clinical governance activities where possible.
Maintain accurate, timely clinical documentation and discharge summaries.
Ensure safe prescribing and follow antimicrobial stewardship guidelines.
