Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1. To provide skilled nursing care under the supervision of the nurse providing care, undertaking routine and specifically identified tasks. This will include but is not limited to patient observation, phlebotomy, urinalysis, blood glucose monitoring and, ECG's, cannulation removal, scalp cooling therapy.
2. Requesting Blood tests on ICE as per instruction from registered nurses or medical team..
3. Undertake patient care, ensuring privacy and dignity maintained whilst being aware of physical and psychological needs.
4. Alert the registered nurse or responsible clinical team promptly of any concerns or changes in the patient's condition.
5. To rotate between chemotherapy day unit, outpatient clinics and phlebotomy clinic.
6. To prepare clinics, ensuring that all required information and consideration are given ahead of treatment/ clinic appointments to avoid any on the day delay.
7. Check all clinic areas at the end of the day for paperwork and all areas are clean and tidy.
8. Assist in clerical and administrative duties as required.
9. To action any patient outcomes following clinic reviews e.g. scanning radiotherapy sheets to tertiary centre, prescription requests.
10. Communication with patients, schedulers and parent team where changes in patient's upcoming appointments maybe required.
11. To liaise and communicate effectively with patients and relatives referring them to the nurses regarding their care, treatment and discharge process.
12. To be a patient advocate and signpost to support services.
13. Act in ways that acknowledge and recognise peoples expressed beliefs, preferences and choices.
14. Working with IT systems to check patients prescriptions, appointments and medical information
15. Collect and record data accurately in accordance with trust policies and guidelines.
16. To inform Nurse in Charge of any matters affecting the standard of patient care delivery
17. To organise, prioritise and adjust workload to enhance the delivery of patient care.
18. To be aware of the patient as an individual and adopt a holistic approach to the delivery of care.
19. Dealing with occasional unpleasant conditions such as bodily fluids and assisting the qualified nurse in dealing with violence and aggression
20. To support other team members in their professional work.
21. To be aware of current issues and policies within the Trust and the Primrose Unit
22. To assist the nurse in charge with the cost-effective use of resources in patient care delivery
23. Monitor and replenish stock levels within the Primrose unit and order as appropriate
24. To take part in the development of practice guidelines within the unit/ward
25. To assist Nurse in Charge in identifying, implementing and monitoring the standards of care and working towards a shared goal.
26. To assist the qualified nurse in the risk assessments of all patients and carry out manual handling as per Trust Policy
27. Communicate effectively with colleagues and the multi-disciplinary team, providing clear written and verbal information and instructions when sharing information delegating or handing over responsibilities for care.
28. Complete all appropriate documents in a clear, accurate and timely way, participating in reporting processes as necessary adhering to the principles of confidentiality.
29. To be aware of the current Trust Health & Safety policies and practice in accordance with these policies
30. To attend yearly statutory training in fire, manual handling, infection control, and Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation.
31. To report to nurse in Charge incidents/ accidents to staff, patients and visitors.
32. Encourage patient and user involvement by actively gathering feedback and reporting to senior staff, including any concerns/complaints raised.
33. To report to any defective or faulty equipment to Nurse In Charge as appropriate
34. To ensure proper care and usage of equipment in the Primrose Unit.
35. Support and assist induction of junior health care assistants.
36. To maintain and up-date own development.
37. To ensure statutory and personal development is achieved in line with your Personal Development Plan agreed during your appraisal.
38. To attend and contribute regularly to Primrose Unit meetings
39. To participate in objectives setting and yearly appraisal's.
40. To demonstrate trust values on a daily basis.


Person specification

Qualifications



Essential criteria

* Good standard of General education
* 5 GCSE's or equivalent
* NVQ level 2 or 3 working towards
* Venepuncture course
* Completed care certificate

Desirable criteria

* Evidence of further personal development
Expereince



Essential criteria

* Substantial experience of working in an acute hospital Trust or health care setting

Desirable criteria

* Recent experience of working in oncology/chemotherapy
Knowledge

* Knowledge of NHS practice

* Knowledge of NHS IT systems
