Position Summary
Responsible for budgeting spray applications to fit the needs of the University as well as prepping and applying those applications to the athletic fields and surrounding areas. Coordinating and aerifying all areas of campus including the athletic fields. Placement of equipment to support athletic events, college or off-campus related, to include soccer goals, hurdles, bleachers, pole vault mats, etc.
Responsibilities
* Maintenance and preparation of all athletic fields, courts, and tracks, including mowing and lining of fields and skein areas.
* Assist in off-season turf management including mowing, aeration, slit seeding, top dressing and irrigation.
* Prepare for track and field events and campus use by off-campus summer clientele.
* Placement of all sports equipment from storage to use location (e.g., soccer goals, bases, pole vault mats, hurdles, bleachers).
* Ensure grounds are free of trash and debris.
* Support Grounds Mechanic with winter months metal fabrication projects, equipment repairs, and landscape projects.
* Operate standard grounds equipment (tractor, mower, front-mount mower, line painter, weed whip, etc.).
* Have knowledge of irrigation systems and basic repairs and setup.
* Basic knowledge of construction of fences, concrete macadam work, and storm drain installation is preferred.
* Maintain basic computer skills and campus email/office software.
* Additional duties as assigned to support the Grounds department (e.g., tree removal, mowing, backhoe operation).
* Maintain consistent and reliable attendance.
Qualifications
Education Required: High School Diploma or equivalent. Pennsylvania pesticide license.
Experience Required: 2 years of grounds related experience.
Skills/Characteristics: Excellent knowledge of sports turf management and preparation; ability to work with limited supervision; self-motivated and team-player; strong time management and organizational skills; ability to operate standard grounds equipment; knowledge of irrigation systems; basic construction knowledge.
Special Working Conditions
Outdoor exposure to extreme temperatures; physically demanding including walking, standing, pulling, lifting, and stooping. Must be able to lift an average of 75 lbs. Essential position; may be required for emergency closures or snow removal.
Driving Requirements
Operation of a Messiah College owned or leased vehicle; must possess a valid driver’s license and comply with Fleet Vehicle Use Policy.
