Join iCOMAT – Revolutionising the Future of Lightweight Manufacturing!
ICOMAT is an advanced manufacturing company with game-changing technology that delivers the lightest structures possible for aerospace and automotive, at a scale, rate, and cost efficiency that far exceeds existing composite production processes.
We have built a team of driven and imaginative people aiming to revolutionise the use of composite materials for next-generation lightweight cars, planes, and spacecraft.
We operate automated factories for composite materials, delivering components to Tier 1 and OEMs. The business has three main divisions: development of automated production machines, development of software design and production tools, and operation of the factories.
Currently working with over 25 customers, including multiple leading OEMs, and having completed the largest Series A funding round in composites manufacturing earlier this year, we plan to scale significantly in the next 2-3 years, expanding into Europe and the US.
Our facilities are located in Gloucester UK (Factory 1), Bristol UK (Hardware R&D Centre), and Athens GR (Software R&D Centre).
As we grow, we seek talented individuals to help drive this transformation. If you're ready to join a pioneering team reshaping industries and pushing technological boundaries, we want to hear from you!
We are seeking a highly motivated and ambitious Controls Engineer at Graduate or Associate level to join our dynamic team.
We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated engineer interested in a challenging role within our fast-paced R&D team. The ideal candidate will be passionate about automation technology, eager to innovate, and willing to push current technological boundaries.
As a Controls Engineer in the R&D department, you will contribute to developing core iCOMAT technologies aimed at creating the first fully automated, ‘lights-out’ composites manufacturing process. Your responsibilities will include designing, building, and testing research assets at our Bristol facility, supporting technology development, and providing technical assistance to our sister manufacturing site and customers.
What will you be doing?

* Write new code for PLC, robotic, and SCADA systems.
* Modify and improve existing code to enhance system capability, repeatability, and reliability.
* Maintain a well-structured and commented code base.
* Support commissioning activities at sister sites and customer facilities as needed.
* Introduce innovative approaches and solutions to emerging automation challenges.
* Use structured problem-solving to determine root causes.
* Drive Industry 4.0 and Industry 5.0 initiatives towards fully automated composite manufacturing equipment.
What do we need from you?
* A bachelor’s degree in mechatronics, control, automation, or a related field.
* 0–3 years of industry experience (preferred).
* PLC programming experience (Beckhoff and Siemens preferred).
* Experience with motion control systems, including servo drives, pneumatics, and hydraulics.
* HMI programming experience (desirable).
* Safety PLC programming experience (desirable).
* Experience with robot motion and languages such as IEC 61131-3 (essential), IEC 61499 (desirable), LD, FBD, SFC, and ST.
* Knowledge of programming languages like C++, C#, Python, SQL.
* Experience with robot programming languages such as KUKA KRL, ABB RAPID, or equivalent.
