Chief Registrar Post 2026 - UHB NHS Trust

The closing date is 29 May 2026

An exciting opportunity for the post of Chief Registrar has arisen for 3 enthusiastic and motivated doctors (ST4 or above) in any medical or surgical speciality with an interest in leadership and management. The posts will be based at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) on either the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, or Good Hope and Solihull Hospital sites.

Main duties of the job

The Chief Registrar role provides senior higher specialty doctors with the opportunity to develop valuable skills in leadership and management and gives them a minimum of 40% protected time to put these skills into practice by developing initiatives that address local challenges. Chief Registrars have a tangible impact on service improvement, workforce transformation, engagement and morale, and education and training, and work to deliver better outcomes for patients, colleagues, and organisations.

Doctors benefit from a flexible training model that enables them to develop a portfolio of skills and experience that will benefit future consultant posts and leadership roles and build a profile that marks them out as a future clinical leader.

The role suits doctors who:

* Are comfortable working in uncertain environments and across traditional boundaries
* Relish the opportunity to develop their own ideas and initiatives
* Are committed to and passionate about improving the NHS.

About us

We do this by developing compassionate and culturally competent leaders, being values driven in all that we do and by creating a welcoming and inclusive workplace that thrives on the diversity of our people. As such we want to attract and recruit talented individuals from all backgrounds, and for each of you to feel supported for the diversity you bring, to achieve your full potential. For those staff with a disability, including physical disability, long term health condition, mental health or neurodiverse condition, this also means being committed to making reasonable adjustments needed for you to carry out your role.

Job responsibilities

The appointee will receive close support locally from a senior clinician as their mentor, and nationally from the bespoke leadership and management development programme provided by the Royal College of Physicians (RCP). The RCP leadership and management development programme commences in August/September 2026 and will involve some travel.

UHB is one of the highest performing NHS organisations in Europe with a proven international reputation for its quality of care, information technology, clinical education and training and research. This is an excellent opportunity to develop strong leadership skills both within the Trust and also as part of the RCP programme. This post will provide the appointee a unique opportunity to develop management skills for future consultant posts.

Applications are open to trainee doctors:

* National Training Number (NTN) ST4 level or above
* Locally Employed Doctors (LED) at equivalent experience of ST4 or above
* Working full time or less-than-full-time
* Who have full GMC registration.

This is a fixed-term role for minimum of 12 months. The role may be undertaken in programme or out of programme (training or experience).

Applications must be discussed with your educational supervisor and Training Programme Director (TPD), and permission to apply must be granted by the TPD and evidenced as part of the application process.
