Overview

Location: London Broadcasting House. This role is office-based. Journalism Researchers in News Intake work a variety of shifts covering a rota which includes early and late shifts, nights and weekend work.

Proposed salary range: Up to £26,000 p.a. plus London weighting depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights. We are open to flexible working; please indicate your choice under the flexible working question in the application. Flexible working will be discussed at offer stage.

Purpose of the role: The News Intake team monitor and coordinate incoming files and feeds from BBC staff on location, news agencies and organisations allied to the BBC. The team also manage live contributions from external guests via IP connected devices, preparing them for broadcast and putting them on air via different platforms. They carry out technical and editorial assessments of incoming audio, video and file imports and make recordings of incoming material from a variety of sources, including BBC and non-BBC programmes, gathering and entering information (including copyright and restrictions) on media items in the Jupiter system. They also provide output teams with up-to-date information about live feeds and, where needed, route selectable incoming sources from Agencies.


Your responsibilities and impact

* Monitor and coordinate incoming files and feeds from BBC staff on location, news agencies or organisations allied to the BBC.
* Manage live contributions from external guests via a variety of applications by preparing them for broadcast and putting them on air via different platforms.
* Carry out technical and editorial assessments of incoming video material.
* Make recordings of incoming material from a variety of sources. Arrange recordings of news and non-news broadcasts, including BBC and non-BBC programmes.
* Identify the best material and alert programmes proactively to the editorial significance of pictures, audio and accompanying copy.
* Under the guidance of senior staff on duty, edit rough cut picture compilations and prepare some pre-cut material for transmission.
* Alert news desks and programmes of editorially important incoming material, using various communications systems.
* Capture and enter metadata relating to the audio and video material and ensuring its accuracy, including copyright information and any usage restrictions.
* Provide material to the nations and regions, agencies and BBC external clients or partners.


Qualifications

* Experience of working in a newsroom team in an editorial role.
* Experience of using video editing software or an asset management system or the ability to acquire these skills.
* A good understanding of the main production methods in a multimedia newsroom.
* An understanding of copyright restrictions attached to certain media.
* Excellent communication skills with the confidence to use them.
