Academic Development Programme
New Assistant Professors will undertake a five‑year development programme, culminating in promotion to Associate Professor. The programme includes diverse development opportunities and time for reflection and growth.
Background
The School of Psychology at the University of Birmingham is one of the UK’s leading centres for research and education. It hosts over 120 academic staff and is strongly recognised for mental health, lifespan development, and brain health. Undergraduate and postgraduate courses are highly rated and BPS‑accredited. The Clinical and Forensic Psychology programmes attract outstanding trainees supported by partnerships with external agencies.
Role Summary
The role is that of a Clinical Psychologist (Assistant Professor) in the Centre for Applied Psychology (CAP). It is an education‑focused Clinical Tutor (placement‑related) position with additional teaching responsibilities across Master’s and Undergraduate programmes.
Main Duties
Education
* Lead curriculum development and renewal.
* Develop and manage best‑practice teaching and learning approaches.
* Advise others on learning, teaching, and assessment.
* Deliver discipline‑specific professional programmes.
* Advance teaching practice within modules and the school, supporting student academic outcomes.
* Inform teaching by discipline‑based research.
* Maintain subject expertise and undertake professional development in teaching.
* Play a role in student recruitment, admission, and co‑supervision of doctoral students.
* Teach and examine courses at various levels.
* Plan and review teaching approaches and promote inclusive, engaging curricula.
* Collaborate with colleagues on teaching, learning, assessment, and digital resource use.
* Develop programme proposals and contribute to teaching programme design.
* Supervise, mark, and examine where appropriate.
* Contribute to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, public engagement, and student employability.
* Supervise projects, dissertations, and practical work.
Management / Administration
* Administer and manage teaching and placements across the department/school.
* Lead and manage teams to implement new or revised processes.
* Advise on personal development of colleagues and students.
* Participate in university administrative activities (e.g. panels, working groups).
* Manage enterprise, business development, and public engagement initiatives.
* Contribute to outreach, widening participation, and school outreach.
* Promote equality, diversity and inclusion through monitoring, evaluation, and challenging unacceptable behaviour.

* Maintain relationships with placement supervisors and services.
* Coordinate and plan trainee placements.
* Develop and deliver supervisor training and workshops.
* Oversee trainees’ clinical competence development.
* Provide appraisal, academic, and pastoral support throughout training.
Person Specification
* Professional Doctorate in Clinical Psychology with HCPC registration as a Practitioner Psychologist.
* Demonstrable enthusiasm for clinical tutoring and placement work.
* Strong potential or excellence in postgraduate teaching.
* Experience of clinical practice.
* Leadership and collegiality appropriate to career stage.
* Willingness to contribute to programme development, leadership, and academic life.
* Proven ability to devise and manage learning for self and others.
* High‑level written communication skills.
* High‑level oral communication skills in individual and group settings.
* Experience in clinical supervision of trainee clinical psychologists and/or research supervision.
* Teaching experience at higher education level and scholarship within a subject specialism.
* Ability to design, deliver, assess, and revise teaching programmes or workshops.
* Experience of inclusive approaches to learning and teaching.
* Skills in managing, motivating, supervising, and mentoring others.
* Ability to support integration of practice‑based and academic learning.
* Partnership working skills with internal and external stakeholders.
* Ability to contribute to programme/departmental management processes.

We value diversity of clinical expertise and theoretical orientation. Applications are particularly welcomed from psychologists working in Intellectual Disabilities, Older Adults, Physical Health, or Community Psychology, and those practising within systemic or psychodynamic models. Secondary accreditation (e.g. BABCP, AFT, or relevant psychodynamic training) is advantageous.
