Job Overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen to lead the Spiritual, Pastoral and Religious Care (Chaplaincy) Team at North Bristol Trust (NBT). We are seeking to recruit a dynamic and enthusiastic individual with significant experience working as a Health and Social Care Chaplain, experience in a senior chaplaincy leadership role, including line management, support and supervision, and experience in service administration/management.
This role can be offered as a fixed term contract or internal secondment opportunity for 9 months.
Main duties of the job
You will lead the team of Chaplains at NBT and work collaboratively with multidisciplinary clinical, leadership and education teams, contributing to the delivery of safe, effective and person-centred care. As part of the newly formed Bristol NHS Group, you will collaborate with chaplaincy colleagues at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW) to align process, policies and systems where possible.
Key to your success will be your excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to develop and nurture relationships with stakeholders within NBT, across the Bristol area and at a national level.
You will be responsible for leading the development of our Spiritual, Pastoral and Religious Care service in line with the UK Board of Healthcare Chaplaincy (UKBHC), and lead on the implementation of our Spiritual, Pastoral, and Religious Care Strategic Plan.
You will have the opportunity to make a real difference through your leadership in promoting person-centred spiritual care and wellbeing. Leading on the delivery of spiritual, religious and pastoral care to patients, visitors, staff and volunteers, regardless of faith or life stance, you will act as a link to community faith and belief groups, supporting and facilitating the care of their members while they are in healthcare.
The post is based at Southmead Hospital, but requires you to be available for off-site working at NBT and UHBW sites, including the provision of an on-call service.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
The Lead Chaplain is the senior spiritual, pastoral, and religious care (SPaRC) practitioner at North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT), accountable to the Head of Patient Experience. Based at Southmead Hospital, the post holder provides strategic leadership and vision for the SPaRC department, ensuring its alignment with the Trust’s Patient Experience strategy and annual work plans. They also participate in the out-of-hours emergency on-call SPaRC service, shared with University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust.

Qualifications And Training
Essential criteria
* Postgraduate certificate or diploma in healthcare chaplaincy, or comprehensive theological education to at least diploma level, or evidence of an equivalent accredited faith qualification.
* Ordained minister or experienced lay worker in good standing with a Member Church of the Free Churches Group, the Anglican Church, or the Roman Catholic Church, and able to be endorsed (meeting the appointment criteria for their faith/denominational body) as laid out in the Network for Pastoral, Spiritual and Religious Care in Health (NPSRCH). OR
* A faith representative in good standing and able to be endorsed (meeting the appointment criteria) by their faith/belief/philosophical non-belief body as laid out in the Network for Pastoral, Spiritual and Religious Care in Health (NPSRCH).
Desirable criteria
* Masters level education.
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
* Experience in strategic leadership and service development.
* Experience in providing extensive pastoral ministry within their own faith or belief context including support for people with complex needs.
* Experience in responding to people with spiritual problems encountered in sickness, dying, death and bereavement.
* Experience of preparing and delivering education and training to adult learners.
Desirable criteria
* Experience or understanding of delivering SPaRC to people of any belief and none within a hospital context.
* Knowledge of a range of world faiths and belief perspectives that impact SPaRC within a hospital context.
Skills And Abilities
Essential criteria
* Ability to maintain concentration and adapt rapidly from one person or encounter to the next whilst holding what has been shared.
* Ability to pray with people and to deliver or facilitate religious rites by request, within the scope of the post holder’s faith endorsement.
* Ability to participate in a 24/7 Bristol wide shared emergency on-call service, including lone-working with access to suitable transport, and with a target response time of 1 hour.
* Ability to work in complex and/or stressful situations with exposure to highly distressing or emotional circumstances and to maintain personal resilience.

* Demonstrates personal standards and values that conform to the Health Care Chaplains Code of Conduct as published by the UK Board for Healthcare Chaplaincy (UKBHC) and support the Trust Values.
* Provides care and treatment without discrimination in ways that respects and values diversity regardless of difference including but not limited to age, disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, maternal status, race, ethnicity or diversity of religion, belief, and non-belief.
* Able to respond appropriately to people of all faiths or beliefs including differing philosophical beliefs and those who don’t follow any set beliefs without prejudice or proselytising.
