Utilising Trust policies and protocols, under the proximal supervision of the clinical practitioner, the assistant practitioner will support patient care through a range of clinical and organisational duties.
Key Responsibilities
* Undertake asymptomatic screening and order routine blood investigations, interpreting normal and altered values.
* Carry out patient assessments, review medical history and report any changes to the clinical team.
* Perform clinical skills including venepuncture, immunisation and provision of medication under Patient Specific Directions.
* Maintain and update treatment lists for Chlamydia and routine contraception under PSDs.
* Administer cryotherapy treatments when indicated.
* Assist with partner notification and support patients to use the online e‑PN service.
* Assess patients under 16 and discuss with the clinical team following Trust guidelines.
* Recall patients for Hepatitis A/B and HPV vaccinations, repeat Chlamydia testing and Depo Provera injections.
* Act as an effective member of the multi‑disciplinary team and provide cover for absent colleagues when required.
* Organise and prioritise time to meet patient needs and service priorities.
* Conduct clinical audits such as infection‑control audits.
* Carry out pregnancy testing according to clinical protocols in liaison with the team.
* Engage in outreach work within the community where appropriate.
* Recognise the need for referrals and arrange referrals to NHS or voluntary services.
* Monitor and record basic observations: temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respiration.
* Coordinate support workers and supervise trainee or student staff where applicable.
* Mentor trainee healthcare support workers and trainee assistant practitioners, excluding assessment duties.
* Deliver health education to patients and their relatives.
* Demonstrate professional behaviour, customer‑care skills and maintain confidentiality.
* Adhere to Trust policies, procedures and uniform guidelines, and keep up‑to‑date with new developments and research/clinical audit.
* Maintain patient safety and contribute to service improvement through participation in multi‑disciplinary meetings and incident reporting.
Qualifications and Experience
* Foundation degree or equivalent in assisting professional practice (or relevant qualification). Previous health‑care experience is preferred.
* Demonstrated ability to provide excellent patient care and analyse clinical progress.
* Strong communication, interpersonal and team‑working skills.
* Basic computer skills: use of PAS systems, e‑mail and intranet resources.
* Comfortable with clinical audits, record keeping and maintaining clinical competence.
