Breast Reconstruction Clinical Nurse Specialist

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Breast Reconstruction Clinical Nurse Specialist to join our team of specialist plastics nurses within the Surgery Directorate, working across Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, dynamic and committed nurse who can demonstrate clinical expertise, leadership skills and the ability to communicate effectively across multidisciplinary teams. The successful candidate alongside a fellow Clinical Nurse Specialist will act as the main points of contact for breast cancer and BRCA patients undergoing reconstructive surgery, providing specialist advice, education and psychological support before and after surgery.

The successful post holder should have extensive experience in breast care and have excellent organisational, communication and clinical decision‑making skills, with the ability to work autonomously and manage a complex caseload.

You will support patients with surgical decision‑making, treatment planning, discharge arrangements, follow‑up care, complex wound management and post‑operative complications, while also contributing to service development, staff support, audit and patient information events.

Main Duties of the Job

* Lead the ongoing development of clinical practice within the specialty, contributing to standards of care, service improvement, and the development of policies, protocols, and guidelines.
* Provide specialist leadership, advice and support to nursing and multidisciplinary colleagues, promoting safe, effective and evidence‑based practice.
* Contribute to education, audit, research and quality improvement activity within the service, helping to monitor clinical standards and implement improvements in line with Trust objectives.
* Act as an advocate for patients within the service, ensuring a patient-centred approach to care delivery, supporting informed decision‑making, and promoting dignity, wellbeing and person‑centred care at all times.
* Lead the ongoing development of the specialist service through the development of nurse‑led clinics, policies, protocols, guidelines and standards of care, working collaboratively with multidisciplinary colleagues across the Trust and community settings.
* Provide specialist education, support and training to nursing staff, students and the wider clinical team, contributing to a positive learning environment and the continuing professional development of staff within the specialty.
* Lead and contribute to clinical audit, research and quality improvement initiatives, promoting evidence‑based practice, monitoring standards of care and supporting service development in line with Trust objectives and clinical governance requirements.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* BSc/1st degree (health related) or equivalent qualification/training and experience
* Professional knowledge acquired at degree level supplemented by specialist training, experience and short courses to Masters level equivalent.
* Post‑registration qualification in appropriate area of speciality or equivalent post‑qualification experience.
* Leadership course completed.
* Working towards a Masters degree, or have a Masters degree.
* Having or working towards a non‑medical physical assessment course.


Previous Experience

* Extensive experience of working autonomously at an advanced level within the specialist area delivering effective patient‑focused care.
* Proven evidence of management / leadership skills and autonomous practice.
* Previous experience of student supervision and clinical education at undergraduate level.
* Experience of delivering patient advocacy.
* Experience of audit, research & evidence-based care.
* Experience of delivering change management both personally and as a facilitator.


Knowledge and Skills

* Up to date with current clinical and professional issues.
* Experience of patient advocacy and supporting patient-centred care.
* Evidence of time management and organisational skills.
