We are looking for a Consultant Liaison Psychiatrist to work at The Royal Marsden Hospital. We have 6 PAs to recruit to at our Sutton site (another Consultant Liaison Psychiatrist works 6Pas at our Chelsea site).
The Adult Psychological Support Service (APSS), in which Liaison Psychiatry is based, provides a service for patients across the two sites of the hospital for inpatients, those receiving ambulatory care and outpatients. Other pathways within the service are: directive therapies (e.g. CBT/ Third Wave approaches, EMDR); exploratory therapies (e.g. integrative, existential, psychodynamic); family therapy (primarily working with adult patients with dependent children, and young adult patients); psychosexual therapy.
Main duties of the job
The Liaison Psychiatry pathway has three main functions: (i) to provide the general liaison psychiatry service to the inpatient wards of the hospital, (ii) to provide a Duty Clinician function, and (iii) to provide psycho-oncology psychiatry through pre-planned outpatient and day patient appointments.
The specific psychiatric issues and associated risks in a specialist cancer hospital include hyperactive delirium, steroid-induced mania and psychosis, major depression, suicidal planning and intent, desire for hastened death; as well as people with pre-existing severe mental illness.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
1. Primary medical degree
2. MRCPsych or equivalent
3. The GMC specialist register for general adult or old age psychiatry
4. If an applicant is UK trained, they must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview
5. If an applicant is non-UK trained, they will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.
6. Full and specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or be eligible for registration within six months of interview)
7. Section 12 Approval
8. Registered as a Responsible Clinician as specified by Mental Health Act
Desirable criteria
9. MRCP Liaison Psychiatry subspecialty endorsement
10. Higher Degree in relevant subject (MD, PhD or equivalent)
Clinical Competence
Essential criteria
11. Assessing & managing risk of harm to self & others
12. Diagnosis and evidence-based treatment of psychiatric disorders in adults
13. Choice of psychotropic medication in the context of physical illnesses and their treatment
14. Assessing and managing the severely mentally ill in the general hospital setting, including the use of the MCA and MHA
Experience
Essential criteria
15. Completed minimum of three years full-time training in an approved higher psychiatric training scheme or equivalent
16. A proven track record in liaison psychiatry at ST or consultant level. Specialised knowledge of liaison psychiatry service provision.
17. Clinical expertise in the assessment and management of risk
18. Track record in the training and supervising of clinicians in psychological assessment and nursing development including autonomous practice and prescribing
19. Experience of liaison psychiatry service development, leading clinical governance and audit activities
Desirable criteria
20. Experience in the management of people with cancer and mental health problems, including the assessment and management of complex co-morbidities
21. Experience of oncology / palliative care
22. Post registration experience in general surgery
23. Psychotherapy training of any modality

Flu Vaccination – What We Expect of our Staff
At The Royal Marsden we have an immune compromised patient population who we must protect as much as we can against the flu virus. Each year, seasonal flu affects thousands of people in the UK. Occurring mainly in winter, it is an infectious respiratory disease capable of producing symptoms ranging from those similar to a common cold, through to very severe or even fatal disease.
The wellbeing of our staff and patients is of the upmost importance to us, and it is the expectation of The Royal Marsden that all patient-facing staff have an annual flu vaccination, provided free of charge by the Trust.
