Job Summary

Band 8b Part‑time Clinical Lead Psychologist role within the Liaison Psychiatry service at Wonford House, Exeter. You will lead the psychological input, providing expert assessment, treatment and supervision to complex patients in urgent care, and develop service pathways in partnership with acute and mental health colleagues.


Key Responsibilities

* Provide direct clinical interventions – assessment, formulation, and therapy for patients presenting with complex psychological needs.
* Support the Liaison Psychiatry team to deliver psychologically informed practice through joint formulation, reflective practice, case‑specific consultation and training programmes.
* Lead and coordinate services at RDUH hospitals, ensuring high clinical standards and continuous service development.
* Design, implement and evaluate new service developments, monitoring outcomes and effectiveness.
* Collaborate with health psychology, neuropsychology and other DPT teams to secure integrated care planning.
* Deliver supervisory support and managerial oversight to Band 8a psychological service staff in Exeter and Barnstaple.
* Engage in leadership meetings, planning, and improvement projects to embed a psychologically informed workforce.
* Maintain professional guidelines, policies and procedures, ensuring evidence‑based practice using outcome data.


Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

* Qualified Clinical or Counselling Psychologist (D.Clin.Psychol. or equivalent) with eligibility for Chartered Clinical Psychologist Status in the British Psychological Society, or
* Professional Doctorate in Clinical or Counselling Psychology, or equivalent accredited qualification and HCPC registration.

Desirable Qualifications

* Further training in at least one psychological therapy.
* Experience delivering training programmes.

Essential Experience

* Specialist psychological assessment and treatment across outpatient, community, and inpatient settings.
* Leadership of psychological services and development of policies within the NHS.
* Teaching, training and supervision of psychological staff.
* Diversity and social inequality awareness and experience.

Desirable Experience

* Urgent care and inpatient settings experience.
* Working with challenging behaviours and complex medical presentations.

Essential Skills and Abilities

* Strong leadership qualities, resilience and ability to manage ambiguity.
* Excellent interpersonal, communication and conflict resolution skills.
* Competence in integrating complex data into comprehensive reports and decision making.
* Ability to develop and deliver training underpinned by evidence‑based practice.

Desirable Skills and Abilities

* IT proficiency for managing clinical software and data.

Essential Knowledge

* Wide knowledge of specialist psychological services and NHS clinical practices.
* Research methodology and complex data analysis.
* Current NHS drivers including the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies agenda.

Desirable Knowledge

* Additional knowledge relevant to complex service delivery.
