We are seeking a motivated, enthusiastic, and compassionate nurse with a strong work ethic and a solid clinical background in gastrointestinal or cancer care to join our established CNS team at Band 7 level, on a 12‑month secondment, to cover maternity leave.
You will be part of a forward‑thinking, supportive, and patient‑centred team committed to delivering high‑quality, holistic care to patients diagnosed with Upper GI cancer. The service provides comprehensive support across the entire patient pathway, from initial diagnosis through treatment and recovery, and, where appropriate, into palliative care.
The CNS team plays a key role within the multidisciplinary team (MDT), working collaboratively with medical and surgical colleagues, diagnostic services, and inpatient and outpatient teams to ensure a seamless and coordinated patient journey.
In this role, you will be responsible for coordinating care, delivering expert clinical advice, and supporting patients and their families during complex and challenging times, working both autonomously and collaboratively, with excellent clinical judgement, communication and organisational skills.
Main duties of the job
Provide specialist nursing service to patients and carers with an upper GI cancer diagnosis or when cancer is initially suspected, from investigation to treatment or palliation, supporting transitions from diagnosis to palliative care when appropriate.
Manage an autonomous caseload of patients, delivering high quality clinically effective care, and collaborate with the Gastroenterology Nursing Team, Upper GI Cancer Nurse Specialists, Gastroenterology/UGI Surgeons, Oncology Consultants, and the Lead Cancer Services team.
Lead nurse‑led activities, participate in the Upper GI MDT, and dedicate time to service development, audit and education.
Act as a resource for patients, carers, nursing colleagues and other healthcare professionals, offering expert skills, advice and support in person and via telephone helpline.

Education & Qualifications
* First Level Registered Nurse
* Relevant post‑basic training
* Post registration qualification within speciality or equivalent and ability to link theory or willingness to complete
* Recognised Adult Health Assessment qualification or working towards or willingness to complete
* Independent prescribing qualification or working towards, or willingness to complete
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
* Knowledge of national and local issues in cancer and palliative care
* Effective and sensitive handling of difficult information and situations
* Advanced communication skills, both written and verbal
* Demonstrated ability to problem solve highly complex situations
* Able to work autonomously and as part of a team
* Able to participate/undertake clinical audit and research
Experience
* Demonstrated impact of cancer treatment, understanding of treatment options and side effects in Upper GI cancer
* Experience within a variety of upper and/or lower GI clinical settings
* Experience of teaching and assessing in clinical area
