Background
The Research Programmes and Infrastructure team, part of the College of Medical & Dental Sciences Research Office, supports high-value projects and programmes and leads on renewals for large infrastructure awards. The Project Officer will be embedded within Birmingham Centre for Observational Studies (BiCOPS) and, more broadly, Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit. The role will be located in Public Health Building with established relationships with NHS Trusts, collaborating institutions, patients and public contributors, charities and funders.
Role Summary
The post holder will join a team providing management and administrative support to the Perioperative medicine for older people undergoing surgery scale up (POPS-SUp) study. You will support the BiCOPS Management Team to ensure the POPS-SUp study is delivered in line with funder milestones, working with UK academic staff and colleagues in BCTU and BiCOPS. Our ethos is inclusive and collaborative across clinical disciplines and with policy makers, epidemiologists and other professionals, including patients and community members.
Main Duties
* To support Project Management Committees, workstreams and working groups.
* Support the Project Managers and Programme Managers with dissemination of key project outcomes.
* Assist with preparing progress reports for committee meetings, project planning, and delivering on sub-projects/small projects as defined.
* Draw up project plans, including key performance indicators, and identify milestones.
* Contribute to milestone tracking and KPI tracking.
* Assist with stakeholder management and maintaining regular contact with national stakeholders to understand requirements and review, develop and propose solutions for issues.
* Assess and escalate issues and risks appropriately.
* Assist in the management of project resources and/or budgets.
* Contribute to developing communications plans, presentations, and promoting project outputs.
* Maintain up-to-date knowledge of project management methodologies.
* Determine short-term priorities for work to maximise quality, efficiency and continuity.
* Assist in the evaluation and review of projects.
* Promote equality and values diversity, acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture.
* Undertake other duties as reasonably requested by the Line Manager.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience
* Qualified to UK level 5 (e.g. Foundation degree, HND) or equivalent.
* Project management experience.
* An understanding of applied health research.
* Experience of providing administration support to the delivery of research.
* Excellent IT skills, with working knowledge of standard Microsoft Office software and using custom systems and databases.
* Experience of using reference manager software to support the writing of academic publications.
* Knowledge of the university’s financial and contract systems. Experience of budget management.
* Knowledge of the Equality Act 2010 protected characteristics and how to ensure fair treatment in day-to-day activities.
Dimensions
The role will not require line management or budget management responsibilities.
Planning and Organising
The role holder will forward plan and deliver project plans, reporting to internal and possibly external stakeholders. The role operates within defined requirements, systems and processes, and may consider improvements.
Problem Solving and Decision Making
The role will assist in delivering the POPS-SUp study, assess and escalate risk, and make recommendations for improvements. Day-to-day operational decisions relate to project delivery, within constraints set by project leads/boards.

The role is a key liaison and coordination position with internal and external stakeholders.
