Job summary
UHNM is looking to recruit a substantive full time Consultant Spinal Surgeon. In conjunction with consultant colleagues the post holder will provide a comprehensive complex and non-complex spine surgical service to UHNM. The desired candidate will be comfortable performing decompressive and complex spinal surgery and spine emergency surgery with an appropriate elective sub-specialty interest which will be in line with departmental requirements. The post holder will not be required to undertake any spine deformity surgery.
The successful applicant should demonstrate that they have had dedicated training in spine surgery and are able to perform at consultant level in both complex and non-complex spine surgery including evidence of being able to fulfil a major trauma centre spine surgical on call commitment.
The successful applicant will be expected to work across both our sites at Royal Stoke University Hospital and County Hospital.
Main duties of the job
1. To see patients taken from existing Consultant inpatient waiting lists for pre-operative assessment and to obtain informed consent, prior to performing surgical treatment.
2. To review other Consultants patients waiting follow up with discharge to primary care or facilitation of ongoing care in accordance with guidance issued by current local Commissioners.
3. To provide leadership and skill in primary and revision spinal surgery.
4. To provide specialist services in management of spinal trauma and provide assistance in management of major trauma patients.
5. To manage and be responsible for continuing care of patients with spinal problems in partnership with current spinal surgeons.
6. He/She should be able to provide second opinion for concerned patients at the request of consultant colleagues.
7. To lead ward management by active participation and example.
8. To attend weekly MDT meetings
9. To be active in research specifically for spinal conditions.
10. To attend Regional Spine Network meetings as directed by the RSN lead.
11. To liaise with other surgeons in respect of annual leave and study leave to ensure continued provision of service delivery.
12. To actively engage with the British Spine Registry
13. To participate in a 1:10 on call rota
About us
UHNM is a large acute teaching hospital which is a centre of excellence, a regional cancer centre and major trauma centre. The major trauma centre serves the population of Staffordshire, South Cheshire, Shropshire and North Wales. It is also a tertiary centre for spinal surgery and is part of the West Midlands Regional Spine Network. The Spine Surgery department spans both orthopaedic and neurosurgical specialities resulting in exposure to the full range of spine surgery including deformity, intradural surgery, trauma surgery, reconstructive and decompressive surgery. UHNM is also a designated cancer centre and recognised children's hospital. The spine surgery department works in close conjunction with these services.
