This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing dispensary team within the QE Facilities Outpatient Pharmacy at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead. We are looking for an accredited Accuracy Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) to play a key role in delivering a safe, efficient, and patient-focused service. You will support the supply of a wide range of prescriptions, including specialist medicines such as oral chemotherapy and high-cost therapies, and undertake final accuracy checking to ensure the safe supply of medicines to patients.
This role is ideal for a motivated Pharmacy Technician with ACT accreditation and a strong commitment to accuracy checking skills, driven by being part of a dynamic, patient-centred service in a fast-paced hospital environment.
Main duties of the job
As part of a supportive and forward-thinking team, you will contribute to the smooth day-to-day running of the dispensary, working closely with Pharmacists, Technicians, and the wider dispensary support team. You will also play an important role in maintaining high professional standards, supporting service performance, and contributing to the continued development of the Outpatient dispensary services.
Job responsibilities
* Dispense a wide range of outpatient prescriptions, including specialist medicines such as oral chemotherapy and high-cost therapies.
* Undertake final accuracy checking of dispensed prescriptions in line with ACPT accreditation and standard operating procedures.
* Ensure the safe and legal supply of medicines in accordance with GPhC requirements and pharmacy SOPs.
* Support the efficient day-to-day running of the outpatient dispensary, prioritising workload to meet service demands.
* Maintain accurate patient medication records and ensure correct allocation of stock to patients and cost centres.
* Liaise with Pharmacists, Prescribers, and external teams to resolve prescription queries and support patient care.
* Provide advice to patients on the safe and effective use of medicines, referring to the pharmacist where appropriate.
* Support the dispensing and supply of medicines for the Homecare service where required.
* Contribute to the achievement of Pharmacy KPIs through accurate, timely dispensing and effective workload management.
* Participate in stock control activities including ordering, receipt, expiry checking, and discrepancy reporting.
* Support incident reporting, investigation, and learning in line with safer care and governance procedures.
* Work collaboratively within the pharmacy team to maintain a high-quality, patient-focused service.
* Maintain professional competence, including ongoing CPD and ACPT revalidation requirements.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Registration with GPhC as a Pharmacy Technician
* Pharmacy Service Skills and Pharmaceutical Science Level 3 NVQ (QCF) Qualification for Pharmacy Technicians
Experience
* Pharmacy Technician experience in Hospital Pharmacy or Community Pharmacy
* Experience in performing accuracy checks
* Experience supervising or training others
Knowledge
* Knowledge of the Laws, Guidelines and Standards relating to the supply of medicines from a GPhC registered Pharmacy
* Demonstrate an appropriate level of IT skills
* Demonstrate appropriate level of organisational skills
* Ability to explain clearly and listen to members of the public and other healthcare professionals
* Ability to perform final accuracy checks independently and safely
