The Package
* Starting salary of £18,500 per year (increasing to National Minimum/Living wage after 12 months if applicable)
* 25 days annual leave, plus bank holidays
* 40 hours per week
* Monday to Friday (variable shift pattern)
* Saturday required but very infrequent
* Access to site vehicle (Manual operated)
* Regular training and CPD opportunities
What will I be doing as an apprentice?
You’ll work in a laboratory environment, getting hands-on experience with construction materials. Be prepared to get mucky and work in a non-sterile environment that requires a proactive attitude.
You will be supported by fellow apprentices and experienced technicians, learning on the job and gaining practical experience that is often unavailable in traditional academic settings.
As part of the Holcim laboratory team, you’ll test construction materials like concrete, aggregates, and asphalt to ensure safety and reliability, helping to develop materials that last and are safe for use.
Expect a varied schedule, including testing on-site and in the lab, with opportunities to visit multiple locations to enhance your skills and professional network.
Key responsibilities include:
* Testing properties of construction materials
* Improving product performance and eliminating faults
* Implementing new testing technologies and methods
* Understanding and applying non-destructive testing techniques
* Maintaining safety standards and laboratory accreditation
* Traveling to collect samples from sites
Through training, you will work towards:
* Completing a 21-month Level 3 apprenticeship
* Ensuring safe work practices
* Accurately testing materials in accordance with standards
* Maintaining equipment and records
* Effective communication with team members
Future Career Opportunities
Post-completion, career paths include roles such as Senior Technician, Materials Engineer, Laboratory Manager, or Project Lead, with increasing salary prospects.
This apprenticeship also offers pathways into further education, such as a Level 6 BSc in a related field, and opportunities to become a registered Science Technician (RSci Tech).
Skills, Knowledge, and Experience
About You: You should be meticulous, positive, proactive, digitally savvy, and confident in communication. Flexibility for night and weekend shifts is required, and a manual driving license and access to a car are essential.
Qualifications: Enthusiasm and a willingness to learn are more important than academic results. Be honest about your current knowledge and eager to develop new skills.
How the Apprenticeship Works
Over 21 months, you will dedicate at least 6 hours weekly to off-the-job training, including virtual lessons, shadowing, mentoring, and assignments, supported by Tiro and Holcim mentors. You will earn a salary while gaining valuable qualifications, avoiding student debt.
Eligibility
Applicants must be over 16, not in full-time education, have lived in the UK for 3 years, and have the right to work in the UK. If you don’t meet these criteria, express your interest and we will discuss further.
We are Tiro, committed to helping individuals develop careers in science and technology, making a positive impact on society and the environment.
