Job Description
As Senior Commercial Manager you will undertake the role of Commercial Lead for a Sector or Sub-Sector within our Buildings and Places business. You will drive commercial performance, strategic commercial planning, and contractual excellence across a diverse portfolio of projects. You will lead commercial operational elements, manage risk, and provide commercial expertise to Sector leadership, ensuring alignment with business objectives and sustainable growth. The commercial function links operational requirements with corporate functions such as finance, legal and risk. This role combines strategic oversight with hands-on management and offers the opportunity to influence business outcomes across sectors such as infrastructure, defence, commercial, and social infrastructure. Hybrid working from UK&I offices with relatively frequent travel to client sites and regional offices.
Here’s what you’ll do:
Responsibilities
* Leadership & Planning
o Develop and implement commercial strategies in bids aligned with Sector/Sub-Sector goals and growth plans
o Advise Sector leadership on market risks, opportunities, pricing and commercial trends/benchmarking to support bids
o Support the Head of Commercial to drive innovation across the commercial element of the operation
o Collaborate with the Buildings and Places commercial team to apply a consistent approach across Sectors and report to the Head of Commercial
* Contract & Risk Management
o Oversee negotiation and implementation of prime and subcontracts, NDAs, MOUs, teaming agreements, and JV arrangements with the legal team
o Manage commercial implications of changes, risks and opportunities
o Embed robust risk management procedures across bid and delivery phases
o Resolve contractual disputes and claims in a timely and effective manner
o Lead governance processes within the Sector interfacing with legal, tax, ORM, treasury, and other functions
* Commercial Oversight
o Oversee and support financial project budgeting with project leads to align with commercial goals
o Provide effective project performance reporting with the finance function
o Work with project leads to identify and assess change
o Monitor KPIs and cash flow to meet commercial targets
o Deliver monthly and quarterly reports to Sector stakeholders
* Team Leadership & Development
o Report to the Head of Commercial and support the growth of the commercial team
o Coach and mentor staff on commercial best practices and contract management
o Promote diversity, succession planning, and professional development
* Stakeholder Engagement
o Build and maintain strategic commercial relationships with clients, sub-consultants, and internal stakeholders
o Represent the business in commercial negotiations and industry forums
o Attend client meetings/interviews as required
o Influence bid/delivery strategy and support work-winning activities
Qualifications
* Degree or equivalent in Business, Engineering, Law or related discipline
* Significant experience in commercial management across infrastructure, defence, social infrastructure or related sectors
* Proven leadership experience with commercial and operational responsibilities
* Strong understanding of procurement routes, contracting models, and professional services frameworks
* Experience in benchmarking, pricing and delivery models across infrastructure sectors
* Experience in negotiation and dispute resolution
* Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities; effective listener and persuasive
* Skilled in producing fee proposals, financial analysis, commercial reporting, and risk mitigation
