BGS offers an exciting opportunity for two skilled geomagnetic data processors to join the Geomagnetism Team on 3-year fixed-term contracts. The roles are based in Edinburgh, on the Heriot Watt University campus.
The Geomagnetism Team monitors the Earth’s magnetic field through magnetic observatories in the UK and overseas. We research magnetic field changes caused by space weather and solar activity, affecting modern technology. We also use land, marine, airborne, and satellite data to develop global models of Earth’s magnetic field variations, revealing insights into physical processes within the solid Earth.
Key duties and responsibilities
* Assist with geomagnetic referencing services for navigation, responding to industry customers via email and delivering results within set timescales.
* Support observatory operations by performing routine data analysis, quality control, and monitoring real-time data delivery to scientific and commercial users.
Additional responsibilities
* Provide scientific support for new science, IT, and engineering developments, including space weather and navigational information.
* Undertake on-the-job training in basic geomagnetism to understand the background of the work.
