We are currently recruiting to our Junior Fellow posts here at the QMC Major Trauma Centre. We have positions available from the 6th of August 2026 for 12 months.

Applicants need to be motivated and with a keen interest in the management of Major Trauma patients. Good communication skills are essential as is the ability to work within a multi-disciplinary professional team across a number of different specialties.

As a centre of excellence in the treatment of Major Trauma, the Queen's Medical Centre is a single site multi-specialty hospital, optimised for the provision of trauma care. It is the primary receiving hospital of the East Midlands Trauma Network and manages all types of injuries, providing a 24 hour consultant led service.

The Major Trauma Consultant and multi-professional team co-ordinate the pathway of care for people with severe trauma injuries. Rehabilitation is commenced as early in the pathway as possible to maximise functional outcomes for the patient.


Main duties of the job

* To enhance your knowledge and understanding of immediate lifesaving interventions by attending and participating in trauma calls in resus
* Interpreting initial investigations quickly including blood gas, X ray and CT results in resus
* Liaising with other members of the trauma team, from all different specialties and documenting findings and plans in the Major Trauma admissions documentation
* The main elements of a trauma call including how these should be coordinated and documented
* The management of multi system trauma


Working for our organisation

Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) is the country’s fourth largest acute teaching trust. It was established on 1 April 2006 following the merger of Nottingham City Hospital and the Queen's Medical Centre. We established the East Midlands Major Trauma Centre (MTC) at NUH on April 1st 2012.

We provide acute and specialist services to 2.5 million people within Nottingham and surrounding communities from the Queen’s Medical Centre (QMC) and the City Hospital campuses. We have an annual budget in excess of £682m of public sector funding and employ over 13,000 staff. As an MTC, NUH is a multi-specialty hospital, on a single site, optimised for the provision of trauma care. It is the focus of the Trauma Network and manages all types of injuries, providing consultant-level care.


Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Objectives

* To enhance your knowledge and understanding of immediate lifesaving interventions by attending and participating in trauma calls in resus
* Interpreting initial investigations quickly including blood gas, X ray and CT results in resus
* Being part of the liaising with other members of the trauma team, from all different specialties and documenting findings and plans in the Major Trauma admissions documentation
* The main elements of a trauma call including how these should be coordinated and documented
* The management of multi system trauma

To become more skilled in:

* Primary and secondary surveys of Major Trauma patients in resus
* Tertiary surveys on day 2 of admission
* Participating in the daily ward round
* The pre-operative assessment of patients with multiple injuries
* The appropriate use of monitoring in level 1 beds and interpretation of data obtained
* Liaising with the multi professional team in interpreting data for different team members and planning ongoing care
* The provision of safe and effective care including pain relief to patients undergoing all required surgical procedures
* The safe and effective use of postoperative pain management to ensure that rehabilitation can be carried out effectively
* Leading planning of ongoing care and reconstruction phase of the Major Trauma patients’ in patient pathway
* Surgery lists as required for Major trauma damage limitation and ongoing care surgery

Research and Academic Requirements

Participation in audit and research is expected. As part of the clinical fellowship you will be required to attend morbidity / mortality meetings.

Teaching

You will be expected to take an active part in the departmental rolling teaching programme, both of the Junior Fellow post holders and medical students.

CPD

The post-holder will be expected to be committed to Continuing Professional Development. The Trust will provide study leave and funding in accordance with the current Trust study leave policy.


Person specification


Qualification and experience

* Full GMC registration with license to practice in the UK
* Completion of Foundation (FY1 and FY2) training or equivalent
* Previous experience in any of the following specialties - major trauma, general surgery, anaesthetics, emergency department, orthopaedics, any other specialty related to MT
* MBBS or equivalent
* Experience working in the NHS of 12 months or more
* Able to identify an acutely deteriorating patient. Able to perform basic technical skills including urinary catheterisation, NG tube insertion, ABG sampling, ECG


Teaching and research

* Willingness to contribute to departmental teaching sessions,
* Ability to work harmoniously with colleagues in medical and non-medical disciplines
* Active audit interest demonstrated by at least one completed audit project
* Publication in peer review journals on topics related to general surgery or trauma


Communication and relationship skills

* Good standard of written English
* Demonstrable skills in spoken English, adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues
* Able to work within multidisciplinary teams
* Basic computer skills


Analytical and judgement skills

* Good knowledge of a hospital's Governance systems and the role of a doctor in these processes
* Completion of one audit project
* Participation in: Quality improvement, local/national audit, research, information governance, risk assessment, serious incident reviews

Salary: The quoted salary will be on a pro rata basis for part time workers.

NUH will scan your ID and right to work documentation in to the Trust ID system at your face to face ID appointment. The system will run a check against the key security features within your documentation. The system will provide us with an outcome of your check which will be stored securely on your personal file along with all other pre-employment check documentation.

Consent:

* Transfer of information: If I have previous NHS service - I consent to the transfer of my Electronic Staff Record (ESR) data between this and other NHS Trusts. I also consent to the Occupational Health Department confidentially accessing my occupational health records from my current or previous employer in order to check the status of my vaccinations, immunisations s and screening tests as relevant to the post. I understand this is an automated process and the information will only be used for these purposes prior to me taking up the position at NUH.
* Disclosure and Barring Service: Your post may be subject to a DBS check which incur a cost dependent on the level of check required (£49.50 for enhanced and £21.50 for standard).
