Overview

We have exciting opportunities to join the Coventry & Warwickshire Pathology Services (CWPS) working as a band 3 Higher level Biomedical Assistant in the Blood Sciences department at our Nuneaton site, George Eliot Hospital, and Coventry site, University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire. CWPS is a long established Network hosted by University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire NHS Trust.

Responsibilities

* Under supervision and according to Standard Operative Procedures perform an extended range of technical support duties within the laboratory, rotating through all sections of Blood Sciences, predominantly supporting Biomedical Scientist staff within the team to facilitate optimal patient care.
* Provide support to BMS staff by operating and maintaining analysers, perform some manual tests and provide support on benches.
* Fully participate in the 24/7 shift rota.
* Input accurate and timely patient and specimen data on to Trust computerised systems.
* Safe disposal of contaminated materials, including sharps and confidential waste.
* Sort and identify specimens received, identify and take appropriate action in the event of any discrepancies.
* Prepare an extended range of samples for testing by laboratory staff and provide support with laboratory tasks as required by BMS staff.
* Prepare basic confirmatory/supplementary work to support BMS staff, excluding unsupervised interpretive tasks.
* Undertake agreed clinical and non-clinical tasks following training, referring to appropriately trained staff as required.
* Participate in training and support less experienced staff in their orientation to the department and role.
* Act as the first point of contact for routine daily maintenance problems on analysers.
* Participate in appraisals and personal reviews and work to achieve personal objectives.
* Operate and perform maintenance on a range of manual, semi-automated and fully automated laboratory equipment and analysers.
* Work at all times according to policies and Standard Operative Procedures and raise to scientific staff any changes in practices.
* Promote and monitor adherence to Health and Safety and Trust policy designed to protect healthcare staff and service users from known hazards.
