The Post
National Services Scotland (NSS) are seeking to appoint a Consultant in Medical Microbiology to support strategic and operational activity being undertaken by NHS Scotland Assure within the Antimicrobial Resistance & Healthcare Associated Infection (ARHAI) Scotland service.
ARHAI Scotland is a clinical service within NHS Scotland Assure, providing national expertise for infection prevention and control (IPC), antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and healthcare associated infection (HAI) for Scotland. ARHAI Scotland aims to improve the health and wellbeing of the population by reducing the burden of infection and antimicrobial resistance within Scottish care settings. This is delivered through establishing a robust evidence base for practice and building mechanisms for monitoring key priority areas, connecting with the wider health and social care and public health system and collaborating with key delivery partners including NHS Boards, care providers and other national bodies as commissioned by the Scottish Government
ARHAI Scotland consists of a multi-disciplinary team of subject matter experts in the fields of infection prevention and control and antimicrobial resistance. Externally, the post will interact with a wide range of stakeholders and service users, including antimicrobial resistance, antimicrobial stewardship, infection prevention and control, Scottish Diagnostic laboratories and Scottish and UK AMR reference laboratories, medical and a range of clinical colleagues in Boards, as well as relevant representative networks with an interest in this area, including the Scottish Microbiology and Virology Network.
The Candidate
The post holder will have an enthusiastic approach, excellent organisation and communication skills and as part of a multi-disciplinary team (including nurse consultants, medical consultants, pharmacists, scientists, administration and management colleagues), must have a proven track record as a team player. It is also vital that you demonstrate the NSS values of working with respect and care, openness and integrity, to focus on our customers, demonstrate commitment to each other and excel and improve.
The post holder will play an important role in a range of activities to support the Scottish One Health Antimicrobial Use and Antimicrobial Resistance programme in ARHAI Scotland. As such, the post-holder should have substantial experience of antimicrobial resistance practice within the UK NHS or in broadly equivalent roles and have practical experience of facilitating change in clinical practice.
Appropriate governance for the professional responsibilities and delivery of outputs for this post holder will be agreed in conjunction with the successful applicant, including line management.
The successful candidate will be required to undergo a PVG Scheme/Disclosure Scotland check. Any candidate who have lived/worked overseas for more than 12 months in the preceding 5 years will also be required to provide a criminal record check from the appropriate overseas agency.
The post is subject to the terms and conditions of service of Hospital Medical and Dental Staff and Doctors in Public Health and the Community Health Service (Scotland) Consultant Grade. Candidates must have current GMC registration at the time of applying.
Location and Working Pattern:
This is a national post. The contract location of this role will be Delta House, Glasgow, however, we promote hybrid working with significant scope for working from home. The post holder will be required to travel to hospital and elective care centre sites across Scotland. Some travel between NSS sites may be required.
This is a fixed term or secondment opportunity for 2 programmed activities per week (1 day) to be worked flexibly during Monday to Friday with no requirement for on-call rota participation. If the post is taken up as a secondment, candidates must have the support of their employing Health Board.
It is a condition of this employment that you must live and remain a resident within the UK for the post in which you will be employed with NSS.
