Senior Healthcare Support Worker
The Healthcare Support Worker will work as part of the ward team with supervision of registered practitioners to provide effective, safe, patient‑focused care at all times. The role contributes to the development of a positive, professional care environment, maintains daily service provision, ensures smooth ward operation, and treats patients, relatives and carers in a friendly and efficient manner.
Key Responsibilities
* Work as part of a designated clinical and care team delivering care that focuses on the direct needs of the individual.
* Assist patients with personal hygiene, toileting and use of continence aids.
* Support moving and handling, use of mobility aids, correct patient positioning, and assess pressure areas and skin integrity.
* Develop positive relationships with parents, families and carers.
* Be aware of patients’ needs – emotional, social, physical, and cultural; respect privacy, dignity and beliefs; act in line with equality and diversity values.
* Work cooperatively, professionally and constructively within the team.
* Actively participate in health promotion activities such as reducing obesity and smoking cessation.
* Maintain confidentiality at all times.
* Report any information regarding the well‑being of patients to the Registered Health Care Professional promptly.
* Support individuals who are distressed.
* Manage and organise time and activities to support and meet the needs of individuals.
* Empower patients and their families to make their own decisions about health and choices.
* Assist with dietary needs of patients as required.
* Undertake a range of clinical competencies, e.g., safe venepuncture and cannulation as requested; have competencies checked annually by a Registered Healthcare Professional.
* At the request of a Registered Health Care Professional, perform and record physiological measurements within the remit of the SHCA role and report accurately.
* Obtain samples at the request of a Registered Health Care Professional, including wound swabs, eye swabs, urine specimens, MRSA swabs, stool samples and sputum specimens.
Job Details
* Full‑time (37.5 hours per week) Senior Healthcare Support Worker on a permanent basis.
* Work location: Orrell ward, Royal Albert Edward Infirmary, Wigan.
* Experience in a high‑acuity area preferred.
Qualifications
* Hold a recognised NVQ Level 2/QCF Level 2 in Health & Social Care or a Care Certificate.
