GRADE: Senior Clinical fellow

POST: This post is for 12-24 months offering 6-12 months rotations, based on clinical need of the department, between the:

1. Paediatric and Neonatal Unit at the Bedford Hospital
2. Paediatric Unit at the Luton and Dunstable Hospital
3. Neonatal Unit at Luton and Dunstable Hospital

Hours per week: 40hrs

Salary scale: Is between £41,750- £64,288 (Basic salary and out of hours as per junior doctors Contract). Please note overseas training experience at the same level will be recognised as per the pay point scale described in NHS employer section.

Main duties of the job

Duties of the post:

•Attend Ward rounds and outpatient clinics.

•Assist in the day to day running of inpatient paediatric ward, CAU, Ambulatory Care and Neonatal Unit, and the supervision and support Tier 1 doctors.

•Examination of children with suspected or actual child abuse at the request of Social Services Department or Police, preparation of appropriate medical records and attendance at Case Conferences along with the consultant.

•Keep such records as may be required. These must be dated and initialled, together with any other related administrative duties, including discharge and clinic letters.

•Duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate Consultant(s), in consultation where possible with colleagues both senior and junior.

•The post holder will agree to read and follow any protocols of medical cover laid down (either in writing or verbally).

•In case of any difficulties ensure that the advice of a senior colleague is sought, escalate issues as appropriate.

The proposed timetable will be discussed with applicants. This will need to be changed from time to time to respond to the demands of the service. The appointee undertakes, exceptionally, to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances, outside normally rostered duties as essential part of providing safe patient care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

A full shift working pattern not exceeding 48 hours including prospective cover for annual and study leave. The on-call registrars are supported by Tier 1 trainees both day and night. There is onsite consultant support until 22:00 and off-site cover overnight

Qualifications

Essential criteria

4. Medical Degree – MBBS or equivalent

Desirable criteria

5. Additional relevant clinical experience - APLS/EPALS/ NLS
6. Post-graduate qualification

Registration

Essential criteria

7. Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
8. Evidence of achievement of Foundation competences in line with GMC standards/ Good Medical Practice including: Good acute clinical care- Paediatrics and Neonatal, maintaining good medical practice, good relationships and communication with patients, good working relationships with colleagues, good teaching and training, professional behaviour and probity

Essential criteria

9. Fit to undertake the role with satisfactory
10. Satisfactory DBS clearance
11. Demonstrates awareness of ethical principles, safety, confidentiality and consent
12. Occupational Health clearance

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria

13. Excellent all-round experience of DGH work
14. Minimum of 2/3 years’ experience in
15. Paediatrics and Neonatology
16. Proficient in basic paediatric procedures- cannulation / LP / airway management / UVC / Intraosseous access
17. Ability to work independently, but aware of own limitations and know when to seek advice from senior colleagues

Desirable criteria

18. Experience of working at registrar level
19. Minimum 6 months experience in working in NHS

Language Skills

Essential criteria

20. All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues demonstrated by one of the following : a) Undergraduate medical training in English b) Evidence of IELTS score or equivalent as per GMC

Academic / Research Skills

Essential criteria

21. Understanding of the basic principles of audit, clinical risk, management and evidence-based practice

Desirable criteria

22. Evidence of participation in QIP
23. Evidence of relevant academic & research achievements

Teaching

Essential criteria

24. Interest in and ability to contribute to teaching and learning of more junior doctors and medical students
