Role Overview
The Head of Health, Safety & Environmental manages and monitors the delivery of Health and Safety processes, assists in writing policy and procedures documents, method statements and risk assessments, and ensures the H&S team stays current with legislation and regulation. They liaise with senior project managers, provide support and escalation as needed, and promote a positive Health & Safety culture across the business.
Role Responsibilities
* Ensure the skills and knowledge of site staff is maintained by identifying where training or requalification is required (in line with the company training matrix).
* Monitoring and reporting on site activities during regular site visits.
* Liaise with clients or other stakeholders and attend meetings as required.
* Review investigations and reporting of incidents to identify root cause, recommend actions and ensure actions are delivered to prevent re-occurrence.
* Prepare and distribute regular health and safety alerts as required.
* Liaise with technical, quality and contracts departments to ensure procedures and manuals include all relevant H&S requirements.
* Manage ongoing maintenance of the H&S internal management system and maintain certifications for ISO 9001 and 14001.
* Knowledge and implementation of ISO 45001.
* Promote a positive Health & Safety culture.
* Manage the H&S team within Lawtech Group.
* Attend pre-start site surveys, project handover meetings and ongoing project meetings.
* Attend regular H&S review meetings.
* Prepare H&S strategies and internal policies and ensure all project managers are aware of all policies and procedures.
* Work with ISO & Environment manager to prepare and maintain procedures and documentation, including method statements and CoSHH assessments.
* Carry out H&S inspection/audit visits on a regular and ad-hoc basis to monitor compliance and correct breaches and risks.
* Identify and manage in‑house training of managers and employees in Health & Safety issues and maintain H&S sections of the training matrix.
* Liaise with project managers, technical managers and EWI manager to manage subcontractor training requests.
* Record essential information including incidents, accidents and near misses for production of statistics and site improvements.
* Keep up to date with relevant legislation, regulations and industry requirements.
* Advise on specialist areas: fire regulations, hazardous substances, noise, safeguarding machinery and occupational diseases.
Skills And Qualifications
* Good working knowledge and experience of ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001.
* Detailed knowledge of CDM Regulations 2015.
* Working knowledge of all major health and safety legislation, including TG20‑21 and SG4 NASC requirements.
* Experience of SSIP schemes and the maintenance of company accreditations.
* Experience of delivering training and presentations.
* Level 6 qualification: Grad IOSH (e.g., Nebosh Diploma, NVQ level 6 Diploma, working towards CMIOSH).
* ISO 45001 auditor credential would be advantageous but is not essential.
* NEBOSH Fire Certificate would be advantageous.
* Good understanding and experience of the construction and insulation industry.
* CSCS card (appropriate skill level).
* CRB checked as required for specific sites.
* Ability to construct executive reports summarising a range of activities and their impact.
* Financial budgeting for health and safety.
* Ability to present key strategic decisions to the board for better development of the business.
* Competent user of MS Word, MS Excel, MS Project, and Microsoft Outlook.
* Strong communication skills.
