Overview
Undertake general pharmaceutical duties under the supervision of a Section Manager or deputy, assisting in the provision of a safe and effective Pharmacy service in line with current policies, procedures and legal requirements.
Responsibilities
* Perform a wide range of duties within the Pharmacy Department to support Pharmacists & Technicians in providing a comprehensive dispensing and distribution service, with main duties based in the Dispensary.
* Dispense from a variety of prescription types and electronic systems; may include visits to wards to top-up stock, transfer medicines to patient bedside lockers, and transfer medicines between wards.
* Fill orders for wards and departments; undertake reception duties covering hospital staff and patients; manage computer ordering; and carry out general housekeeping duties as required.
* Dispense, check and hand out completed outpatient prescriptions to patients or their representatives according to standard operating procedures.
* Coordinate the supply of items owed to patients and ensure they are dispensed and onward transport is arranged in a timely fashion; monitor stock levels and resolve supply issues; dispense controlled drugs according to procedures.
* Maintain stock on dispensary shelves, top up and tidy with backup stock from stores; perform regular expiry date checks and remove out-of-date items in line with procedures.
* Assist at staff and patient reception areas: meet and greet, process prescriptions and payments, operate equipment as required, answer telephones, and direct callers or transfer to appropriately qualified staff.
* Coordinate others to carry out tasks as necessary and provide training or guidance to less experienced staff; participate in internal audits and surveys of service delivery.
* May provide top-up service to inpatient wards, ensuring wards are fully stocked with medicines, rotated, and expiry dates checked; liaise with Ward Sisters and Ward Pharmacists; sort returned medicines for re-use and return to stock via the computer system.
* Process and assemble orders for wards and departments with attention to Pharmacy stock control systems and ordering; assist in sorting returned and waste medicines; keep records of workload (e.g., filing, photocopying).
* Ensure the patient services section has a readily available supply of sundry items (e.g., bottles, bags) by topping up daily and checking order status.
* Adhere to standard operating procedures and Health and Safety procedures; manage stock control and ensure security of medicines within daily duties.
* Be responsible for organising own daily duties; re-arrange duties as required to cover for absence; senior staff may coordinate cover and oversee/train less experienced staff.
Working pattern
Additional working pattern details: 09:00-17:30, dispensing for in-patients, out-patients and patients going home, according to SOPs.
