We are commissioning an artist, creative practitioner, arts collective or arts organisation to co-create an art installation for the entrance to the Alexandra Hospital, Redditch entitled WELCOME, to be completed in spring 2026.
Job Description
We are recruiting an artist, creative practitioner, arts organisation or collective with a novel and innovative creative approach to co-create an artwork for installation at the hospital's entrance that will transform the space and engage staff, patients, and members of the local community. The commissioned artist will work with clinical and non-clinical NHS staff, representatives from NHS staff networks and members of the patient forum, as well as members of the local community of Woodrow in which the Alex is based to co-create the final design. This means eliciting their ideas in workshops to inform the artwork.
This project builds on previous artwork that the Trust has commissioned at other sites in the region in a variety of artforms. We are therefore interested in hearing from a broad range of practitioners to deliver this commission that could include but are not limited to: Sculptors Carvers Designers Curators. The final artwork will be inclusive of and reflect and relate to the clinical environment and the diversity of local communities. The project must also be a memorable experience for staff, patients and visitors, bringing local people together positively. We are particularly keen that the project delivers against the 3 key aims of the project: Transform the healthcare environment into a welcoming space for all visitors, patients, and staff; Co-create an artwork that communicates a message of care and inclusivity and is representative of the town of Redditch; Generate a sense of ownership between staff, patients, visitors, the local community, and their hospital. We are particularly keen to work with artists, creative practitioners, arts organisations or collectives who have a socially engaged practice and can work dynamically in a large and complex institution, such as the National Health Service.

We welcome proposals from artists, collectives or organisations working in, but not limited to: Sculpture, Carving, Design, Curation.

Key dates: We will be holding an Open Day for prospective candidates to see the site, meet with stakeholders, and find out more about the commission on 16th September at 10.30am. If you cannot make this session, we will be holding an online session on 16th September at 1pm to answer any questions you may have.
Interviews 2nd October 2025.
Workshop dates between October 30th and November 14th 2025.
Initial designs submitted to Steering Group 15th Dec.
Final designs submitted to Steering Group 12th Jan 2026.
The fee for this commission is up to £19,000, inclusive of VAT. Please see the full brief for details of what else is included or excluded.
Job Responsibilities
Skills and experience: Essential: A good grounding in an artform relevant to the brief; A flexible and inclusive approach to co-creation; Experience of delivering a co-creation project; Excellent group facilitation skills that provide structure and promote shared ownership and participation for all; Experience and skill of working with communities least engaged in arts and culture; Experience of designing and delivering workshops with a range of ages and abilities; Commitment to data gathering and reflection for evaluation purposes; Experience of creating and installing public art. Desirable: Experience of co-creating a public art installation; Experience of working in health care settings or a hospital; 3+ years' experience of delivering co-created workshops; Experience of evaluating co-created workshops.
Please be aware that public transport is limited in Redditch, so the ability to drive and access to a car is the ideal transportation mode.
