Duty Counsellor (1 Full Time, 1 Part Time)

Position ID: BU03868. Department: Student Support and Well-being. Grade 7. Salary: £38,249 – £45,413. Permanent contract. Reports to Head of Wellbeing & Inclusivity. Closing Date: 05-11-2025.


Overview

Bangor University is seeking two experienced Duty Counsellors to join the Wellbeing & Inclusivity team. They will provide specialist psychological and emotional support to students facing mental health, behavioural, and interpersonal challenges.


Purpose of the Job

The Duty Counsellor will deliver confidential counselling, conduct clinical assessments, manage risk, and coordinate with external providers. They will also support service development through workshops and campaigns.


Main Duties and Responsibilities


Student Support & Clinical Work

* Provide duty cover at the Hub and Rathbone location, ensuring prompt responses.
* Deliver confidential one‑to‑one counselling using evidence‑based techniques.
* Assess suitability for internal or external services and manage risk cases.
* Plan and prioritise clinical caseloads, balancing supervision and service commitments.


Service Liaison & Partnership Working

* Act as key contact for external counselling provider, ensuring efficient referrals.
* Liaise with academic schools, professional services, and external agencies.
* Provide guidance on student mental health concerns to staff.
* Respond promptly to urgent enquiries.


Data, Evaluation & Reporting

* Use psychometric tools to assess progress and outcomes.
* Collect, record, and analyse service data to identify trends.
* Prepare reports for the Head of Wellbeing & Inclusivity.
* Maintain accurate confidential clinical records.


Service Development & Contribution

* Contribute to wellbeing initiatives, workshops, and campaigns.
* Participate in development and review of service policies.
* Represent the Service at university events and committees.
* Share professional expertise in team meetings.


Other Duties and Responsibilities

* Prepare for audits, reviews, and compliance activities.
* Participate in performance reviews, training, or workshops.

Person Specification


Essential Qualifications

* Undergraduate degree (or equivalent).
* Recognised professional qualification in counselling/psychotherapy.
* Eligibility for accreditation by BACP, UKCP, BABCP or equivalent.


Desirable Qualifications

* Supervision qualification or experience.


Essential Experience / Knowledge

* In‑depth knowledge of at least one counselling/psychotherapy theoretical model.
* Substantial experience in clinical assessment.
* Experience in crisis management and risk management.
* Knowledge of mental ill‑health among students.
* Experience in referral procedures for psychiatric support.


Desirable Experience / Knowledge

* Facilitating groups/workshops.
* Understanding changes in higher education and student mental health.
* Experience with diverse backgrounds and inclusive practice.
* Knowledge of local and national services and legislation.


Essential Skills / Abilities

* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
* Excellent IT and ability to learn new systems.
* Ability to write reports and interpret data.
* Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.

Desirable

* Communication in Welsh desirable; learning opportunities available.
