Job Overview

A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and dedicated Specialist Screening Practitioner (SSP) to join the Shropshire Bowel Cancer Screening Centre.

The successful candidate will be primarily based at William Farr House but will be required to work regularly across the service’s additional screening sites at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and The Princess Royal Hospital in Telford. The service currently operates six days a week, Monday to Saturday, with the potential to expand to a seven-day service as the programme develops. You will become part of an established, supportive, and highly professional team committed to delivering high‑quality care to all screening participants.

The post holder will work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure the effective delivery of the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme, maintaining high clinical standards and contributing to continuous service improvement. We pride ourselves on being a friendly, approachable, and supportive team, committed to delivering the highest standards of care to all participants within the screening programme.

As part of our team, you will benefit from a positive working environment with opportunities for ongoing training and professional development. We actively encourage innovation and continuous improvement, and we are always looking for new ways to enhance our processes and the care we provide.

Main duties of the job

* Work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and as an autonomous practitioner, managing caseload of patients within the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.
* Undertake nurse‑led clinics, including patient assessment, provision of information, and supporting individuals preparing for endoscopic and radiological investigations.
* Provide high‑quality, patient‑centred care.
* Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, and colleagues, including the delivery of sensitive and complex information such as breaking significant news.
* Collaborate closely with the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure coordinated and seamless care across all stages of the screening process.
* Contribute to achieving Trust objectives, as well as local and national targets set by the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.
* Accurately record and maintain patient data using the national Bowel Cancer Screening IT system.
* Undertake and successfully complete all required trainings.
* Participate in ongoing professional development, supported by in‑house training, supervision, and mentorship to meet the requirements of the role.
* Maintain and develop knowledge and skills relevant to the role, with desirable exposure to areas such as screening, gastroenterology, endoscopy, pre‑assessment, or oncology.
* Demonstrate strong IT skills, ensuring timely and accurate data entry and effective use of digital systems.

Working for your organisation

You will be joining a dedicated and experienced team comprising a Programme Manager, Lead Specialist Screening Practitioner, 12 Specialist Screening Practitioners, a Health Improvement Practitioner, a Programme Co‑ordinator, and 5 Admin and Clerical Officers.

Our Poppy’s Promise Commitment

We believe that compassionate care sits at the heart of everything we do. Every member of our team — clinical or non‑clinical — plays a vital role in ensuring that patients, families, and colleagues are treated with dignity, empathy, and respect at all times. We expect all staff to demonstrate compassion not only through their words, but through their actions: by listening attentively, communicating clearly and kindly, and recognising individual needs, feelings, and circumstances of those in our care. Effective communication is central to safe and high‑quality healthcare. We value colleagues who take the time to understand others, explain information in a meaningful way, and respond to concerns with patience and understanding. By joining our team, you are committing to uphold these values — ensuring that every patient feels heard, respected, and valued, and that compassion is embedded in every interaction, every day.
