Associate Professor – Machine Learning & NLP (Social Media Analytics)

Full‑time, 2‑year convertible tenure track at UNSW, Sydney, NSW, Australia. Salary, Level D – AUD $185,917 to $204,218 per annum + 17% superannuation.

Responsibilities

  • Lead high‑impact research in Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language Processing, including large language models and social media analytics, with national and international visibility.
  • Shape the strategic direction of research and education in AI and NLP at the School of Computer Science and Engineering.
  • Foster industry engagement and collaborations, contributing to the School’s research profile and educational excellence.
  • Secure competitive research funding, lead research initiatives, and supervise higher‑degree research students.
  • Deliver high‑quality teaching and develop curriculum at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Demonstrate clear leadership within the discipline, including academic governance and program development.

Qualifications and Skills

  • A PhD (or equivalent) in a related discipline and/or relevant work experience.
  • Proven commitment to staying current with discipline knowledge and developments.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching and learning design, course development and delivery at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
  • Experience with educational technologies and online delivery methods.
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness, passion for educational excellence, and fostering this in others.
  • Demonstrated experience with industry or work‑integrated learning.
  • Professional development of teaching practice and leadership of an inclusive culture of excellence in learning and teaching.
  • Successful initiation of curriculum development and improvement.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills.
  • Ability to support and inspire students from diverse backgrounds and support equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives.
  • Significant track record in research leadership with high‑quality, high international impact outcomes.
  • Excellent record of recruiting and supervising high‑calibre students.
  • Leadership in building engagement and partnerships with the profession and industry.
  • Understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values, and relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to training.
