The Department of Law at Birmingham City University sits within the School of Law and Social Sciences and is a large, vibrant, collegiate, and diverse community of legal scholarship, learning and practicing with a strong commitment to excellence, innovation and transformation through legal research and practice-based education. The Department provides academic and professional legal education across all levels, from foundation year to PhD, including our flagship LLB, LLM programmes and Professional/ Legal Practice LLM offer. The Department is home to well over a thousand students and has trained many of the legal professionals in the region and beyond.
The Department is currently looking to appoint a candidate who is a qualified Solicitor or Barrister with a valid practising certificate and recent practice experience. The successful candidate will help develop and grow the suite of clinic offerings within BCU’s TEF rated “outstanding” Law Clinic and will be integral to delivering the Law Clinic’s strategy of growth and diversification to facilitate opportunity for all our students with a view to good graduate outcomes and employability. A core focus will be “work readying” students for the evolving graduate jobs market in the age of increased global and technological challenges and opportunities.
Responsibilities
* Work within the law clinic alongside the current Law Clinic Director on various voluntary law clinic activities and assessed placements.
* Drive growth with private practice for students to gain practical and meaningful experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels across a range of placement opportunities.
* Collaborate with external partners; the Law Clinic works closely with Central England Law Centre, Support Through Court and Citizen’s Advice.
* Contribute to delivering the Law Clinic’s strategy of growth and diversification, supporting student employability and good graduate outcomes.
* Assist with the development of educational delivery on the UG LLB law programme and/or practice-facing LLMs, especially within legal professional modules and SQE preparation courses.
Qualifications
* Qualified Solicitor or Barrister with a valid practising certificate and recent practice experience.
* Ability to work with a diverse student body and engage in practice-based legal education.
