Maths Tutor - Functional Skills (Prison Education)
Location: HMP Wayland
Salary: £30,000 - £35,000
Contract: Full-time, Permanent
Hours: Monday - Thursday, 7:45am - 5:00pm, Friday 7:45am - 12:30pm
About the Role
We are looking for a passionate and dedicated Maths Tutor to deliver high‑quality Functional Skills Maths within HMP Wayland. You will work with small groups of learners, helping them develop essential numeracy skills while supporting their confidence, motivation and long‑term goals.
Working in prison education is a unique and rewarding opportunity. You will play a vital role in helping learners gain qualifications that support rehabilitation, employment and positive progression on release. Many learners may have had limited or negative past experiences of education, so your ability to build rapport, inspire and adapt your teaching is key.
What You Will Do
* Deliver engaging Functional Skills Maths sessions from Entry Level 1 up to Level 2
* Support learners with a wide range of abilities and learning needs
* Plan lessons, develop resources and create individual learning plans
* Provide learners with clear guidance, feedback and progression support
* Monitor progress, maintain accurate records and support learners toward qualification achievement
* Use varied teaching approaches to create an inclusive and supportive classroom environment
* Play an active role in helping learners develop confidence, employability and essential life skills
What We're Looking For
* Minimum Grade C/4 in GCSE Maths (or equivalent)
* Ability to deliver Functional Skills Maths at Entry Level to Level 2
* Experience delivering training or teaching to groups
* Strong communication skills and the ability to motivate and encourage learners
* A teaching or assessing qualification
* A flexible, learner‑focused approach and a commitment to high‑quality delivery
