Brighton & Newhaven Fish Sales is a wholesale and retail fish outlet located at Shoreham Harbour, next to Hove Lagoon. We supply high-quality, day-caught local fish and shellfish to the UK wholesale, catering, and hospitality industries, as well as to the public via our Quayside Fish Shop. In partnership with Leach Fishing, we offer guaranteed provenance for all fish landed directly to us, ensuring traceability and quality.
About the role
We are looking for a proactive and hands-on individual to manage the daily operations of our busy retail shop. This varied role includes customer service, food preparation, stock control, staff management, and administration. You’ll ensure smooth shop operations, maintain high product standards, and support the team through effective leadership and communication. The ideal candidate will be confident working with bespoke systems, managing inventory, and contributing to marketing initiatives, while also liaising with senior management to deliver business objectives.
Key Responsibilities
* Shop Operations: Manage daily opening/closing routines and customer service. Operate bespoke till systems and handle fish preparation. Ensure restocking and oversee in-house food production.
* Administrative Duties: Maintain purchase records and perform accurate cash-ups. Manage cash float and compliance documentation. Use Excel/Word for operational and safety records.
* Staff Management: Lead recruitment, training, and rota planning. Allocate holidays and ensure payroll coordination. Support team communication and performance.
* Stock Control: Order fresh and dried goods, optimizing local sourcing. Coordinate joint orders and manage stock rotation. Check goods-in for accuracy and quality.
* Till & Scale System Maintenance: Troubleshoot system issues and order spare parts. Update product pricing and print accurate labels. Ensure smooth operation and fault resolution.
* Marketing & Promotions: Manage advertising budget and social media presence. Organise events, special offers, and promotions. Drive customer engagement and brand visibility.
* Collaboration & Development: Attend departmental meetings and liaise with Directors. Support delivery of agreed outputs and improvements. Contribute to team and business development.
What We’re Looking For
* Strong retail and customer service skills with upselling ability.
* Comfortable with Sunday – Thursday working pattern which may include holiday cover for the Manager.
* Experience in fish filleting, food safety, and allergen handling.
* Proficient in Excel and Word for record-keeping and admin tasks.
* Leadership experience in recruitment, rota planning, and team development.
* Organised in stock management and supplier coordination.
* Technically confident with till/scale systems and troubleshooting.
* Marketing knowledge including social media and event planning.
* Effective communicator with senior management and team members.
