Overview
We are seeking an experienced Rail Supervisor to oversee maintenance activities across passenger and freight fleets, based primarily in Derby with travel across the East Midlands and occasionally further afield.
The successful candidate will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising weekly maintenance works, ensuring staff, resources, and safety standards are managed effectively.
This is a leadership role that requires a strong knowledge of both passenger and freight traction fleets, alongside proven people management skills within a rail environment.
Key Responsibilities
Maintenance Planning & Delivery
Prepare, coordinate, and execute weekly maintenance plans.
Ensure all works are delivered in line with operational, safety, and quality procedures.
Manage the availability of spares, tools, and documentation to support smooth delivery.
Team Supervision & Leadership
Line manage a team of around 8 staff, ensuring effective deployment of skills and resources.
Provide leadership, coaching, and performance management.
Ensure all staff adhere to health, safety, and rail compliance standards.
Operational Oversight
Supervise activities across the Derby location, with occasional travel to Leicester, Loughborough and occasionally the West Midlands.
Act as the key point of contact for local operations, liaising with engineering managers, planners, and control.
Ensure shift handovers, reporting, and record keeping are completed to standard.
Compliance & Safety
Promote a strong safety culture, ensuring compliance with company and industry standards.
Lead toolbox talks, risk assessments, and site safety briefings.
Investigate and report incidents, implementing corrective actions where required. Essential Experience & Skills
Minimum 5 years' experience in the UK rail industry (passenger and/or freight).
Demonstrable background in rail supervision/people management.
Strong knowledge of rail traction and rolling stock maintenance.
Experience in planning and delivering scheduled maintenance programmes.
Excellent organisational, communication, and leadership skills.
