At Suffolk County Council, every role is a chance to create positive change. As an Archaeology Project Officer Community Archaeologist for the Romans Unearthed Community Archaeology Project, you’ll see the direct impact of your work on the people and places that make Suffolk special.
Your Role And Responsibilities
* be a key member of a new project team to plan and develop an exciting new community archaeology project, Romans Unearthed and contribute to a successful Stage 2 grant application from the National Lottery Heritage Fund that will enable the project’s delivery
* have a chance to use your skills to plan, develop and deliver community archaeology fieldwork and experimental archaeology
* have an amazing opportunity to teach and support volunteers to record skills in BAJR (British Archaeology Jobs and Resources) Archaeology Skills Passports and AQA Unit Award Scheme certification
* develop innovative new ways of using project activities to contribute to national wellbeing working collaboratively with Historic England wellbeing team
* utilise your skills to work closely with consultants, key communities, partners and the project’s Management Steering Committee to plan and deliver a successful project
* support project aims to integrate archaeological protection with environmental land management schemes, and if Stage 2 grant application is successful, work with Historic England and Suffolk Police to undertake COSMIC (Conservation of Scheduled Monuments in Cultivation) assessments of sites and develop land management plans and heritage watch schemes, supported by Project Manager and SCC’s (Suffolk County Council) Archaeology Archives and Projects Manager
* lead on researching and creating a methodology and toolkit in the development phase to measure the carbon footprint of archaeological excavations throughout the project and contribute to national research on this issue.
You will need:
* a degree or equivalent in archaeology or history/or equivalent experience
* experience of professional archaeological fieldwork and have supervised fieldwork on-site
* knowledge and understanding of at least one of the following: archaeological periods in England, the landscape and archaeology of Suffolk, community involvement and a willingness to learn more in these areas
* a passion for making a positive difference for Suffolk’s archaeology and have a genuine commitment to connecting communities with their local heritage.
* to bring creativity into your work through innovation and openness to change
* to be collaborative and support your colleagues
* great organisational skills and experience of organising and delivering projects
* experience of working with volunteers and local communities, preferably on community archaeology projects and with young and vulnerable people
* good knowledge and experience of preparing and working to specifications and delivering projects to time, quality and budget.
