Phoenix Engineering Co. Ltd - Machinist Background Phoenix Engineering Company Limited, a leading supplier of road making and repairing equipment are seeking machinists to join their Machine Shop team at their Chard site. The positions are permanent, day shifts only, working independently with the minimum of supervision. The potential exists for job sharing or flexible working hours. (see below) The Company is a stable, family run business with a history going back over 130 years, with a solid order book. With the development of new products underway the opportunity exists to influence manufacturing process. The Role The successful candidate will be responsible for taking engineering designs and after consideration of available equipment and tooling, establish the most effective means of manufacture. Within the machine shop, the following equipment is available – Colchester Multiturn and Tornado machining centres (Fanuc/G Code) Colchester Alpha lathe Stanley Oilfield lathe Harrison centre lathe Universal milling machine Vertical slotter Pillar drill Tool grinders The expectation is that the machinist will have the knowledge and experience to operate some or all this equipment. With respect to the CNC equipment, we are seeking an individual who can determine tooling and material requirements, develop programmes, then set and operate. A varied workload passes through the machine shop, varying from large diameter rollers through to small piece parts. Batch size varies between individual prototype parts up to larger runs of 250 components. The successful candidate will be expected to undertake routine machine maintenance and make minor adjustments as necessary. The role requires the individual to follow the Company rules, instructions and safety guidelines. PPE provided for the individual’s Health and Safety, as defined by documented Risk Assessments shall be used. Requirements EITHER Proven CNC Programmer / Setter / Operator within an engineering environment. • Relevant programming skill and experience. • Setting and first off inspection experience / use of measuring equipment. • The ability to read and interpret technical drawings and assessing tooling and material requirements. • Confidence in self-checking and adjusting machine parameters with minimal supervision. OR Proven Setter / Operator of manual machine tools within an engineering environment. Must have - • Experience in operating manual machinery including milling machines, lathes, grinders and slotters. • Setting and first off inspection experience / use of measuring equipment. • The ability to read and interpret technical drawings and assessing tooling and material requirements. Working shift 371/2 hours a week. Monday – Thursday 7.30 – 4.30. Friday 7.30 – 11.00. Overtime (when required) available until 15.30 Friday. 25 days holiday a year plus Bank Holidays. On site parking, Annual health assessment.
