Overview

The post holder is responsible for leading and managing the Wakefield Integrated Sexual Health Service, working with organisational Directors and partners to deliver high-quality management, operational leadership and strategic service delivery. The role requires efficient use of resources, visibility to patients and staff, and achievement of strategic and contractual objectives within Sexual Health Services in the Wakefield District. The post holder will report to the Cluster Manager and work with the CQC Registered Manager for Wakefield’s sexual health services to ensure effective delivery of clinical practice within agreed service specifications, organisational principles and allocated resources.

This role includes the operational and strategic management of clinical and administrative staff, stakeholder engagement and organisational change to promote corporate cohesion, workforce development, and adherence to core staff competencies and behaviours. The role may involve on-call responsibilities and cross-cover for other SH sites if required.


Main duties

• Deliver organisational and integrated Sexual Health Service KPIs and agreed development programmes to achieve local, regional and national objectives.

• Serve as budget holder and lead governance to ensure a well-managed, financially efficient, and service-delivery driven organisation.

• Agree recruitments and cost efficiencies under the direction of the Cluster Manager.

• Lead change management initiatives to improve service provision through collaboration with stakeholders.

• Contribute to senior meetings (SLG, contract meetings, ICGBs, operational meetings) and lead or contribute to RCAs, complaints, business planning, tenders, continuity planning and HR processes (grievances and disciplinaries).

• May be required to participate in an on-call/duty manager rota or cross-cover for other sites.

Job description and responsibilities

The Role

We are seeking an experienced and visionary Head of Service to lead our Sexual Health team in Wakefield. This is a pivotal leadership role to shape the future of sexual health provision in the district and contribute to wider public health priorities.

As Head of Service, you will

Lead the operational and strategic delivery of the Wakefield Integrated Sexual Health Service. Inspire and support a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, including doctors, health advisors, nurses and healthcare support workers, supported by an administrative team. Drive service innovation, quality improvement and clinical excellence. Manage budgets, contracts and performance frameworks with a focus on sustainability and impact. Build strong partnerships with commissioners, public health teams, voluntary sector organisations and service users. Champion equity, inclusion and accessibility in service design and delivery. Represent Spectrum at local and regional forums and contribute to policy development and sector-wide learning. Demonstrate substantial healthcare leadership experience, ideally in sexual health, public health or community services. Show understanding of sexual health challenges, inequalities and opportunities for innovation. Be skilled in managing complex services, leading change and inspiring teams. Possess excellent communication, negotiation and stakeholder engagement skills. Be passionate about improving access to care and empowering individuals to make informed choices about their sexual health. Bring a collaborative, inclusive and values-driven leadership style.

Person Specification Education: Essential – Evidence of Continuous Professional Development in leadership and management; Masters or equivalent; Computer literacy qualification (e.g., ECDL) or equivalent; Management qualification. Desirable – Evidence of research and audit in addition studies. Knowledge: Essential – Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary environment; understanding of specialist (level 3) sexual health services and their operational needs; understanding of physical health needs of clients with sexual health problems; patient-centred approach; good written and verbal communication; ability to work across agency boundaries; understanding of HR/Rota/Training and ability to prepare clear reports. Desirable – Understanding of primary care systems and procedures; knowledge of local and national sexual health agenda; experience in clinical governance. Skills: Essential – Effective team working and facilitation; keyboard skills for professional practice. Desirable – Coaching skills.
