The Role
We are seeking an experienced
Bookkeeper/Payroll Manager
to oversee client bookkeeping and payroll functions, manage junior staff, and ensure compliance with HMRC regulations and the Solicitors Accounts Rules (SAR). This role suits a motivated professional who combines technical expertise with strong leadership and client relationship skills.
Key Responsibilities
* Act as the primary client contact: gather information, clarify requirements, and brief junior bookkeepers.
* Manage and supervise junior bookkeepers, ensuring accurate, on-time delivery.
* Review and finalise month-end management accounts, VAT returns, and payroll submissions for accuracy and compliance.
* Prepare draft statutory accounts and tax returns for partner review.
* Oversee payroll processes, including PAYE, NI, pensions, and statutory payments.
* Maintain accurate records and ensure compliance with HMRC and SAR.
* Collaborate with the Director to enhance quality control and monitor KPIs.
* Liaise with auditors, HMRC, and other stakeholders as required.
Requirements
* Minimum
5 years' bookkeeping experience within law firms
, with in-depth knowledge of
Solicitors Accounts Rules (SAR)
.
* Strong understanding of UK payroll legislation and compliance.
* Proven experience managing both bookkeeping and payroll operations.
* Proficiency with
Xero, Clio, LEAP, QuickBooks, and Sage Payroll
.
* Excellent communication, organisation, and leadership skills.
* Ability to work independently to strict deadlines with high accuracy.
Minimum
RQF Level 3
qualification in bookkeeping/payroll (e.g.,
AAT Level 3
)
or
2–3 years' relevant managerial experience.
