Full time 41 Hours Permanent National As a Systems Design Engineer, you’ll help shape the future of parcel automation at Royal Mail. You’ll support the end-to-end design, development, and delivery of advanced automation systems, working across the full engineering lifecycle from requirements capture and system architecture through to implementation, integration, and testing. Bringing together networking (including Wi-Fi), Linux-based edge computing, controls, and automation technologies, you’ll design robust, scalable, and secure solutions for large industrial environments, ensuring high performance, reliability, and compliance with cybersecurity, safety, and data standards. The role Develop system architectures, specifications, and interfaces based on customer requirements. Perform feasibility studies, risk assessments, impact analyses, and performance modelling. Configure, troubleshoot, and maintain Linux networking on industrial/edge hosts, ensuring persistent and stable network behaviour. Plan, validate, and document network-level connectivity (e.g., NAT, port forwarding, firewall rules, multi-interface routing). Build automation and scripting tools to deploy configurations, collect diagnostics, and support field troubleshooting. Contribute to backend services, APIs, device integration, and automation logic using good software engineering practices (Git, code review, CI-friendly workflows). Develop and execute system test plans, integration testing, performance validation, and structured root cause analysis. Apply cybersecurity standards, conduct vulnerability assessments, and ensure GDPR compliant data handling. Skills and expereince required • Experience in systems design for automation, robotics, logistics, or industrial environments. • Strong systems thinking, analytical skills, and structured problem solving capability. • Expertise in Linux networking (routing, bridging, NetworkManager, interface management, logs). • Competence in network troubleshooting (tcpdump, packet analysis, latency/retry behaviour). • Knowledge of network security fundamentals (firewalls, NAT, segmented networks). • Scripting/automation skills in Bash and/or Python. Qualifications • Degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechatronics, or related fields. • Experience with Wi Fi critical warehouse/industrial environments. • Familiarity with enterprise WLAN tools/methodologies for survey and validation. Knowledge of Linux service management and hardening (systemd, logging pipelines, config persistence). • Relevant certifications (e.g., networking, wireless, Linux). • Awareness of industry standards (e.g., IEC, ISO, machinery safety).
