Assistant Dean of Maths and English
Salary: £56,507 per year. Job Type: Permanent, 35 hours per week. 4 positions available.

This role supports and deputises for the Dean of Foundation Studies at a specific City of Liverpool College site to ensure the successful running of FME.
Responsibilities include local leadership of quality cycles, performance management, attendance monitoring, performance data, and development and effective adaptation and implementation of the school’s curriculum offer.
Work with other Assistant Deans, the Curriculum Team, Heads of Schools/Deputy Heads, Inclusion Managers, Progress Leaders and Senior Progress Leaders to ensure high levels of student satisfaction, achievement and sustainable progression.
As this role contains teaching duties, you will lead by example in achieving excellence in teaching and learning, providing innovative ideas for all teaching, learning and assessment under your remit.
Key Responsibilities
* Collaborate with the Dean of Foundation Studies and the curriculum team to develop and implement a curriculum offer that leads to sustainable destinations for all students.
* Provide adaptive schemes of work with a curriculum focus.
* Support the Dean in the design of programmes, teaching approaches and assessments to achieve the highest standards.
* Undertake line management and appraisal of staff to ensure effective course management and administration of a portfolio of programmes.
* Support continuous improvement of teaching, learning and assessment by providing developmental observations, learning walks and appropriate coaching and mentoring support.
* Promote a positive culture in FME, supporting new staff with training and coaching as needed.
* Ensure students’ programmes are individually tailored to progress to further learning or employment, including the development of enterprise and employability skills.
* Collaborate with College business support and student services to deliver successfully managed exams and controlled assessments.
* Assist in developing the school’s self‑assessment and quality improvement plans.
* Support the College’s attendance and achievement targets to ensure all students receive a high‑quality learning experience.
* Stay abreast of national developments in further education, innovative curriculum and technology to drive progress and achievement.
Teaching, Learning and Assessment
* Plan, prepare and deliver high‑quality lessons to manage the learning process effectively.
* Use a range of effective techniques to engage and motivate students, encouraging independence and autonomy.
* Establish a purposeful, motivating learning environment where students feel safe, secure, confident and valued, and promote proper behaviour, communication and respect.
* Set and mark work, track all students’ progress and attendance in accordance with College systems and policies.
* Collaborate with colleagues to support students’ English, Maths and Digital skills development.
* Communicate and consult with parents, carers and students, including Parent’s Evening, Welcome Evenings, events and open evenings.
* Provide class cover and undertake additional duties, such as participating in Open Evenings and other College events across campuses.
Generic Duties
* Contribute fully to the mission and values statement of the College Group, ensuring its effective implementation in all aspects of College life.
* Engage in the College and curriculum area strategic objectives and the annual review.
* Take proactive responsibility for Health & Safety, maintaining a safe working environment and practices.

* Support cross‑college activities, particularly key enrolment and invigilation periods.
* Review own professional development needs and participate fully in training and development.
* Participate in internal and external quality cycles, undertake key training for exam boards and support internal verification systems for all qualifications.
* Deputise for the Dean of Foundation Studies in any necessary capacity.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise – Essential Criteria
* Educated to degree levels and/or significant professional experience.
* A recognised teaching qualification with an English or Maths subject specialism.
* Experience of leading and managing English or Maths teams.
* Experience of coaching and mentoring others.
* Successful GCSE and/or Functional Skills teaching experience.
* Excellent computer literacy – ability to use the current IT programmes of the College.
* Experience of leading GCSE and Functional Skills internal quality assurance.
* Proven relevant experience of curriculum design, development & delivery.
* Detailed knowledge of the curriculum area.
* Engaged and passionate about Continuing Professional Development.
* Minimum of Level 2 literacy and numeracy or willingness to complete.
* High level of communication and interpersonal skills, effective member of a team.
* Ability to set high standards for students, colleagues and oneself.
* An ICT qualification.
* Membership of a relevant professional body.
* Experience of assessing students’ needs and planning curriculum for their benefit.
* Good understanding of curriculum development to meet the training needs of employers and other stakeholders.
* Ability to work with the site team to improve attendance and engagement using college monitoring systems.
* Cover classes or additional duties such as open evenings across College campuses.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise – Desirable Criteria
* Experience of coaching and mentoring others.
* An ICT qualification.
* Membership of a relevant professional body.
