The Role


Join our Team as a Communication Support Worker (CSW) at the Deaf Academy!


Either Full (35 hours) or Part Time roles available, Term time (39 weeks)

Are you working at a BSL Level 3, and have experience of supporting Deaf people to access communication, and want to develop your professional skills in completing further CSW qualifications. If so, we want to hear from you!

We are looking for passionate and dedicated CSW's to support our students both on and off-site. Based at our state-of-the-art Academy in Exmouth, you will also travel regularly to other Further Education (FE) provisions, including Exeter College and work placements.

The role of CSW is to facilitate two-way communication between our deaf students, mainstream tutors, and peers. You'll be encouraging the social and emotional development of deaf learners, to become confident and independent. You will take notes and modify English and other resources to ensure they are accessible to our students. Additionally, you will support students during work placements, providing access to information and communication at this crucial time in their lives. This also extends to supporting as a Job Coach in their work placements, supported by our Work Related Learning Coordinator. In this role you'll be supporting the student in their work placement learning journey, whilst also being their communication support.

Qualifications

Qualification Title

Good Standard of literacy and numeracy Essential

BSL Level 3 (minimum BSL 2 with commitment to achieve level 3 within 2 years) Essential

Degree or equivalent qualification Desirable

Edexcel Professional Development Award for CSW or equivalent Desirable

Skills

Experience/Knowledge

Knowledge of Deaf culture and deaf issues Essential

Personal Attributes

The ability to form and maintain appropriate relationships and personal boundaries with children and young people Essential

Experience

Supporting deaf learners in a communications context Essential

Well-developed verbal, written and signed communication skills to liaise with pupils, parents /carers and colleagues. Essential

Ability to form good working relationships and to work as part of a professional team, including with other professionals from outside of the Academy. Essential
