Right Now Group are representing a well-established specialist freight forwarder, who are currently recruiting for a Customs Team Leader to join their operation based in the Kent area. Our client is seeking a proactive and experienced individual to oversee road freight customs activities, ensuring all import and export processes are completed accurately, compliantly, and within agreed timeframes.
Position: Customs Team Leader
Location: Kent
Hours: Monday - Friday, 09:00 - 17:30
Salary: up to £40,000
Key Responsibilities for a Customs Team Leader:
* Lead and supervise a team of Customs Clerks, ensuring workloads are distributed effectively to meet deadlines and service expectations.
* Oversee the completion of import and export declarations, ensuring accuracy and compliance with all regulatory requirements.
* Act as the main escalation point for complex or high‑risk customs entries and resolve issues efficiently.
* Ensure adherence to all HMRC and associated regulatory frameworks, keeping up to date with legislative changes.
* Monitor daily operations, reviewing documentation and entries to minimise delays, errors, or financial penalties.
* Maintain strong communication with clients, internal departments, and external stakeholders to ensure smooth operations.
* Oversee the correct calculation and processing of duties, taxes, and deferment accounts.
* Identify risks within customs processes and implement improvements to enhance efficiency and compliance.
* Support the training, development, and performance management of team members.
Key Skills for a Customs Team Leader:
* Proven experience in customs processing, including import/export declarations and CDS systems.
* Strong understanding of tariff classifications and customs compliance requirements.
* Working knowledge of DEFRA.
* Previous supervisory or team leadership experience preferred.
* Proficiency in CargoWise is desirable however not essential.
* Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
* Ability to problem‑solve and make decisions under pressure.
* Collaborative approach with the ability to build strong working relationships across teams.
