Job Description

The Times and The Sunday Times represent a combined 400 years of covering news and providing comment and analysis on the UK and the world. We are authoritative, credible, responsible, trusted and a part of the nation’s cultural heritage.

Your role: The Times is seeking a Deputy Business Editor to oversee and ensure the delivery of a distinctive, agenda-setting business news and feature package across all platforms.

They will be responsible for developing and encouraging reporters, the day-to-day running of the business news desk: including overseeing the news list and ensuring timely production of quality content for digital platforms.

Working closely with the business editor, associate business editor and the business news editors you will ensure The Times delivers business news, features and investigations that add significant value to our digital offering and the newspaper.

This is a desk based editing role. A proven track record as a senior business journalist or editor is essential.

Day to day you will:

1. Deputise for the business editor, attend editorial conferences, and represent the section on Times Radio and at industry events.

2. Work closely with the business editor and associate business editor to deliver distinctive business features and investigations.

3. Originate and develop strong comment ideas for digital and print audiences.

4. Assist in editing the business section on mobile, desktop and in the newspaper.

5. Commission graphs, tables, video and other elements that can enhance our business coverage digitally and in print.

6. Assist people management

7. Join the rota of business desk editors to edit the section on a Sunday

What we’re looking for from you:

8. Experience working as a senior reporter or editor for a leading financial news website or national newspaper.
9. Experience managing people and budgets.
10. Experience in digital and ideas of how to grow our digital audience.
11. Ability to use social media platforms to engage new audiences for The Times.
12. Able to work autonomously and to strict deadlines.
13. A strong understanding of editorial compliance and regulatory issues.
14. You are comfortable in ambiguity. As newsrooms and audience behaviours evolve quickly, you need to lead and communicate with confidence as strategies change.
