Southend City Council are currently recruiting a team of gardeners to assist the Parks Operations in undertaking the maintenance work in public parks, recreational grounds, sports grounds / golf courses, floral displays, landscaped areas and similar open spaces within the Borough of Southend’s Cemetery & Crematorium.If you are enthusiastic and motivated to ensure the highest aesthetic standards through a practical frontline approach, this could be a great opportunity for you.
Your new role
Join the Parks Department to assist with the maintenance work in our green flag parks, recreational grounds, landscaped areas, and open spaces, which include highway verges, shrub and rose beds.
The team are seeking candidates to join them in a long-term contract position with full-time hours (37–42 hours per week).
Hours of work will be on a flexible rota, but it will generally be 7am–4pm Monday-Thursday and 7am - on a Friday. Weekend work may be required, but will be based on a shift rotation. There are four ground maintenance depots: Belfairs; Priory Park; Chalkwell Park; and Great Wakering. You will be working in the vicinity of one of these sites to carry out your day’s work. This could include working on the highways.
Duties will include all
1. Grass cutting.
2. Use of a strimmer on highways
3. Edging of grass areas.
4. Hedges, Shrubs and Rose beds.
5. The preparation and planting of the summer / winter bedding.
6. Summer & Winter sports maintenance.
7. Marking out summer / winter sports pitches.
8. Weed spraying.
9. Littering and bin emptying.
10. Opening and closing of sports pavilions.
11. Cleaning of toilets and other council facilities
What you'll need to succeed
A suitable applicant would ideally have experience of working within the park's environment, general labouring, landscaping or outdoor work. Experience in this sector will ideally demonstrate your reliability for the hours of work and working outside. If you are a driver, this would be advantageous.The Council is an equal-opportunities employer.
