Clinical Pharmacy in General Practice is revolutionising how pharmaceutical care is delivered and were looking for a Prescription Technician to be part of that transformation. Were offering an exciting opportunity to join our hardworking and welcoming GP Practice as an Administrator, providing vital support to our dedicated Pharmacy Team. This is a 12-month maternity cover role, with the possibility of future opportunities for the right candidate. This role is part time, approximately 20 hours per week, spread across Monday to Friday. We're happy to offer flexibility to accommodate other commitments or responsibilities.

You'll be at the heart of our clinical operations, helping ensure the smooth running of pharmacy-related administrative tasks. From handling prescription queries to supporting medication reviews, your work will directly contribute to patient safety and the efficiency of our practice.

This role comes with full training, so no formal qualifications are required. However, previous experience in a pharmacy or GP practice would be preferential but what matters most is your enthusiasm, reliability, and willingness to learn.

This position offers valuable insight into both pharmacy and GP practice settings and is ideal for anyone considering a future career in healthcare administration or pharmacy support.

Main duties of the job

As a vital member of our Pharmacy Support function, youll be trained to contribute to safe, efficient, and cost-effective prescribing across the practice. Your core duties will include:

* Prescription Management: Process routine and monthly prescriptions, ensuring accuracy, adherence, and timely turnaround.

* Clinical Support: Monitor high-risk medications, identify required blood tests and reviews, and escalate to clinicians as needed.

* Patient & Staff Liaison:Where appropriate you will respond to medicines-related queries from patients, carers, and clinical colleaguescovering interactions, availability, urgent requests, and more.

* Medication Reconciliation: Review hospital discharge summaries and reconcile prescriptions, flagging discrepancies for correction.

* Governance & Safety: Promote safe medication use, report incidents, and support safeguarding efforts.

* System Expertise: Use prescribing and dispensing systems to troubleshoot issuesand support staff development.

* Pharmacist Collaboration: Work closely with pharmacists to review medications and recommend prescribing changes that enhance patient outcomes.

Responsibilities in General Practice:

Respond to prescription requests from community patients, care home staff, pharmacy staff and GPs, processing them within 48 hours for routine prescriptions.

Process monthly prescriptions, checking for changes and adherence/over-ordering issues.

Use practice and CCG templates to record near patient monitoring for high risk drugs.

Identify blood tests, recalls and reviews using established protocols and forward these to the appropriate clinician.

Support and respond to medicines related queries from medical and nursing colleagues and from patients and relatives both face to face, via phone or via email. Queries can include issues with interactions or ADRs, availability of stock, swallowing difficulties, cost-effectiveness, urgent requests or extra supplies.

Review hospital discharge notifications and reconcile medication against current repeats, flagging up and help with correcting discrepancies.

Promote safe use of medication, reporting of medicines related incidents and pro-actively preventing safeguarding incidents.

Use knowledge of GP computer prescribing systems and community pharmacy dispensing systems to advise on solving problems related to prescribing/dispensing and other areas to develop the skills of practice and pharmacy staff.

Support the review of care home procedures, making recommendations for potential improvements.

Observe the principles of clinical governance when following policies, protocols, guidelines, SOPs and procedures.

Support practice prescribing budgets by on-going monitoring, audit and analysis of drug use and support practices in reviewing, developing and enhancing cost-effective prescribing. This includes staying aware of latest QIPP and other cost targets.

Help review medication with the pharmacists and make recommendations for prescribing changes to improve outcome and ensure prescribing of the most cost effective product.
