Travel to Work - Some prison establishments are situated in rural locations with limited public transport options; a driving licence and own transport is beneficial but is not an essential requirement of the role (unless specified). Shift start and finish times are fixed and it is your responsibility to get to and from your place of work on time for the start of your shift. Accommodation is not provided.


Overview

Life as an OSG includes a variety of duties across different areas of the prison, contributing to keeping a prison running smoothly and safely.


Responsibilities

* Gate duties: ensuring secure entry and exit of staff, visitors, and vehicles; carrying out searches of staff, prisoners, visitors and vehicles; patrolling the perimeter and escorting vehicles and contractors; issuing and collecting staff keys and radios.
* Control room: operating the prison radio system; monitoring CCTV and reporting suspicious activities.
* Visits: welcoming visitors on arrival and providing escort as needed.
* Correspondence: monitoring and logging mail; reporting contraband and preserving evidence where needed.
* Night duties: ensuring cell doors are locked and all prisoners are accounted for.
* Reception: photographing prisoners; processing prisoners' property and parcels.
* Prisoner supervision: supervising prisoners where required; exchanging clothing and property; assisting officers in escorting prisoners around the prison.
* Food delivery: moving and collecting food trolleys around the prison, sometimes using an electric tug vehicle.
* Driving duties: collecting mail from the local sorting office and other related transport tasks which may involve lifting heavy sacks.
* Phone calls: monitoring the prison's PIN phone system; maintaining the log of PIN phone requests; completing relevant records.
* Procedures and protocol: understanding and conforming to national and local policies; responding appropriately to incidents and emergencies.

You do not need any qualifications to do this job. You will need good judgment, common sense, responsibility and teamwork. The jobholder must be able to fulfil all spoken aspects of the role with confidence in English or Welsh where specified.

* Standard full-time working hours are 37 hours per week, excluding unpaid breaks. Some roles may include hybrid or flexible working arrangements where appropriate.
* Location and pattern of work: roles are national; appointment may be to a nearest Justice Collaboration Centre or Justice Satellite Office; arrangements discussed at appointment.
* Tattoo policy: visible tattoos are permitted if not offensive or intimidating; facial tattoos are generally not acceptable except for cultural, religious, or medical reasons.
